Default HDMI Cable question...

I have my PS3, a Samsung HLT5687S, and I also bought a Ultra 800 Monster Cable today at Best Buy. I noticed after I opened up the package that it supports 720p/1080i. Is there a 1080p HDMI cable that I can buy besides this one, or does it convert over to 1080p after it transfers through the cable? I just need to know if I need to buy a new cable. Thanks!

You should be fine.
The cable doesn't do anything but pass the signal.
It doesn't do any conversion on its own.
Set the PS3 to 1080p out and the Sammy will lock on to it.
The pic will look stunning.
For any other future cable purchases, may I suggest going online to MonoPrice?
They have very good HDMI cables (and others) for very cheap prices.
Example: 6ft HDMI male to male gold plated is under $5!

Also, can you see if the Sammy will lock on a 1080p 24fps signal from the PS3?
Some 87 series Sammys do.
If it does but stutters badly, switch back to 60fps (but stay on 1080p!)

My husband sells home theater at best buy and he said that it does support 1080p. It is just older packaging

huh? Maybe it's an old package? All HDMI cables should be able to run 1080p, even my rocketfish (best buy brand) does.

Well, Best Buy didnt have my TV in stock. I am going to go and pick it up on Thusday, the 6th. I just want to make sure that I got the correct cable. If I didn't, I will exchange it when I pick up my TV. You guys sure I got the right one?

well, yes and no.

HDMI cables are either rated "category 1/Standard" or "category 2/High Speed"

Standard (or “category 1”) cables have been tested to perform at speeds of 75Mhz, which is the equivalent of a 1080i signal.

High-Speed (or “category 2”) cables have been tested to perform at speeds of 340Mhz, which is the highest bandwidth currently available over an HDMI cable and can successfully handle 1080p signals including those at increased color depths and/or increased refresh rates.

however,

...Although standard HDMI cable may not have been tested to support the higher bandwidth requirements of cables rated to support high speeds, existing cables, especially ones of shorter lengths (i.e., less than 2 meters), will generally perform adequately in higher speed situations. The quality of the HDMI receiver chip (in the TV, for example) has a large effect on the ability to cleanly recover and display the HDMI signal. A significant majority, perhaps all, of the HDMI TVs and projectors that support 1080p on the HDMI inputs are designed with quality receiver chips that may cleanly recover the 1080p HDMI signal using a Standard-rated HDMI cable.

The "1080p certified" HDMI cable is propaganda from companies like Monster so companies like Best Buy can sell it for outrageous margin points. Unless you're running the cable a great distance, it doesn't matter. You can get a cable that's as good or better from monoprice or blue jeans cable for less than half the price.

I would return the Monster cable, and order one of these.

not only is it a higher rated cable, but with the money you saved you could buy a bluray movie.

I might do just that. The cable I got is the Ultra 800 4 foot Monster Cable.

I have another question. My TV has 3 HDMI ports. What else will I need these for? My surround sound system? DirecTV? And do I need to purchase anything else to watch certain channels on DirectTV? Or am I good to go? Sorry guys, I am fairly new to all of this. Thanks for all your help!

The only thing you did wrong is that you overpaid for a Monster cable. You should have bought one from a reputable budget cable manufacturer like Monoprice or TendonUSA, but other than that you're ok as far as 1080p signals are concerned.

well, what reciever or soundsystem are you using?? you mainly should just need an HDMI cable for each component to the reciever and then 1 cable from the reciever to the HDTV.

Also a hint of advice, I would run the DirectTV directly to the HDTV and use an optical cable to the reciever for audio. why? because when you run all components through the reciever and the reciever out to the HDTV, then all your picture settings will be the same for each component...but if you run your directv to the hdtv, then you can adjust a separate picture setting for your cable and seperate for your bluray.

(typing kinda fast, so let me know if I confused you)

...well, since you said the packaging said 1080i, I would assume its category 1.

....but Monster doesnt go by the categories 1 & 2. They invent their own retarded marketing labels to trick consumers.

You confused me a little bit. Let me put it this way...with my PS3, a Samsung HLT5687s, what cable's should I get? I have just a cheap Surround Sound System right now. I was thinking about buying this one here.

What I meant about this is, since I now have an HDTV, do I automatically get to watch my sports in High-Def when it is broadcast in High-Def, or do I need to purchase something else directly from DirecTV?

If the hlt 87s series stutters or has problems with 24fps from the Ps3 or any blu-ray player it can be fixed with a firmware update.

Samsung will sent out a service tech to do the firmware update on the TV for you.
