Default Which format is easier to pirate?

Is it possible that the format war will be influence by which one is easier to bootleg? While this feature won't drive media sales, it may drive hardware sales, especially in Asia, where this behavior seems most rampant, at least according to US media.

Well, there are not any HD DVD burners yet (I may be wrong). I know that there are some BD recorders.

There are HD burners, they don't work right and are almost impossible to find

It is almost impossible to successfully bootleg on Blu-Ray anything that looks legit, because all the replication lines have their fingerprints taken, and they'll know exactly who's moonlighting

From what I hear, HD-DVD is more susceptible to bootlegging but right now there is not much of that on either side since it is a small market and there are few players out on both sides (if any on the HD-DHD side).

Plus I would think that bootleggers would think HD-DUD is better to Bootleg because they aren't region encoded. This is also a thorn in HD-DUD's side with some studio's like New Line and I'm sure others. Let's face it, the more control studio's can have over the distribution of there movies, the happier they are.

Most pirates are still doing DVD-r or DVD+R. I checked the specs of my S300 and it will NOT do any recordable DB media. If that is the case with most players, piracy is a almost moot point because we can't watch it, except for maybe a PC or PS3.

Unless they manufacture them like a regular movie, piracy will not have much chance to even live for now. Dang it, just when I was hoping for a Transformers rip.

However, they MIGHT be inclined to rip from HD and burn to DVD. Simply because the downsampling could make for a much better picture.

It is very easy to copy BD using Slysofts software. It is cheaper to copy a 25gb movie because the discs are pretty cheap only $10. The issue is most newer movies are on 50gb disc and the 50gb disc are about $30 per disc so you might as well buy the movie because it will cost about the same or even cheaper then burning the disc.

I wonder if it will handle BD+ authored titles. I also found it interesting that it can do more with HD-DVD than Blu-Ray.

Rick

PS. Used AnyDVD for years, and it is terrific.

Well, BD+ and ROM-MARK coming out for Blu-ray will make those titles MUCH harder to copy than existing titles. Currently, both HD DVD and Blu-ray titles are very easy to copy, since AACS is the only copy protection used on both formats.

The fact that Blu-ray put all of the "pirate" countries in one region, "C," will halp a lot also as most movies just won't be released in that region.

It's interesting to note that although you could potentially copy both formats and burn them on whatever said media (DVD+/-arrr; Blu-Ray, etc.) at this point in the "infancy" of Hi definition discs, would there really be that big of a market for them?

How many consumers, who buy their media from street vendors, are going to have 1080P, TrueHD setups with which to play said media?

I'm thinking the pirating issue is a double edged sword (arrgh)... what I mean is the studios are more likely to support the format least likely to be copied where the consumer might lean towards the choice of the format they can "backup"... however the studios are also likely to support a format which sells better so it's certainly an interesting thought (or set of thoughts). I personally think they should quit producing DVD which would force everyone to make a choice in the Nex-gen format war (harsh, but that would escalate things eh?)

Both are too new for pirates to be concerned with, at least financially speaking. Single burners are still too $teep and slow and I can just imagine how much a multiple blu-ray replicator would cost!
Eventually both formats will see more piracy/copy issues as more hackers get involved with reducing hardware costs.

But I'd say blu-ray will eventually be the easier to copy. Because burners are coming down in price while hddvd burners are rare. Also bdr media is getting slightly cheaper.
