Default Shopping for me just got easier!

Greetings everybody. Brand new here - in a way. Been lurking for weeks now.

It occurred to me that blu-rays have another added benefit. And here it is...

I don't have to explain to people to buy me the "wide-screen" version of movies anymore.

Every year well meaning relatives have put me in a gift return nightmare as inevitably they buy me the full-screen versions of movies I ask for. You're sitting there opening the gift, internally upset (yet acting gracious) because of their blatant disregard of possibly the most important detail of every movie-phile. Next you have to go down and wait in impossibly long exchange lines hoping that the store will exchange full screen for wide screen without a receipt. I'm sorry I can't go on describing the scenario because I'm beginning to get upset.

Anyhow, NOW all I have to do is say - buy me a BLU-RAY! (Although I do have some relatives who think that Blu-ray is a slang term for porn, which causes an awkward moment as I have to explain what I mean.)

However, it did occur to me that movie studios are illogical (i.e. Paramount), and they just might decide to release full screen versions of films. Please, blu-ray brethren, ease my mind and tell me they can't do that.

I don't think you have to worry. Why would ANY Blu-Ray movie come out in fullscreen when you pretty much have to have an HDTV to watch it, and HDTV means 'wide'?

Fullscreen...HA! I've always hated it. It's just a slap in the face of the filmmakers.

I especially like it when watching a movie on TV and it says "This film has been modified from the original version. It has been formatted to fit your TV." And then I get huge black boxes on either end of my nice widescreen TV.

HAHA I know exactly how you feel.

It worked with my family. They got me all blu-ray discs.

Now the only thing to look out for are those relatives/friends who know nothing about Blu-ray and buy you an HD-DVD instead! -.-

It took 7 years for my wife's side of the family to realize that after an accumulated wardrobe that I'll never wear and FS movies that have all been exchanged, a gift certificate is all that's necessary.

Welcome to the forums.

I especially like it when watching a 16:9 content that's on a standard def channel upscaled to 1080i - huge black bars on all 4 sides.

I totally agree, I hate fullscreen yet people are so ignorant to the fact that probably 5 years from now the bars that were on the top and bottom will now appear on the sides and I will have to say"told ya so"
The only good thing is dvd players have zoom now if you hate the black bars.

Reminds me of a quote off of Everyone Loves Raymond.

Marie: What is a DVD player?
Ray: C'mon, not now, Ma, please.
Marie: Is it for pornography?
Debra: Yes, Marie, I got Ray a porn machine.
Marie: I don't like that Debra.

Yeah, I know what it was like to tell people that I would rather watch Widescreen instead of Pan & Scan video. My closest friends would say, "Why would you want to watch something like that on a regular screen?" I would tell them that I wanted to see the whole shot. They would stare at me like I was out of my mind. Oh well, now I won't have to explain myself.

It's a pretty strange concept to be hearing from you guys talk about buying the "full screen" or "widescreen" editions. I live in the UK and we've had 16:9 for years now and when DVD come in everything was straight away 16:9 right through, never had to worry about that sort of issue over here.. well thats in my fuzzy memory anyhow.

Welcome to the forum mate.. its really nice to get some more decent folk on the site..

Don't be jealous. I checked it out because I liked their online price, and quickly found out that, in the store, they charge full retail (which they kind of say in the online fine print). However, if you gotta have that hard to find title today, they're probably your best shot (but that's all you should be jealous about). That and Virgin megastore which is the next town over (Ontario).

On the subject of price, I also got a tip from this guy that works at my local Blockbuster. We have a store in CA called Fry's Electronics. Every Friday they put a four page ad in the Orange County Register (ocregister.com) that truly has killer deals on blu-rays. He said that Best Buy will honor that price. Haven't tried that out yet, but probably will soon. The closest Fry's to me is about an hour's drive.

All I really want them to do is keep the origanl aspect ratio of how it was captured. I mean IMAX is 4:3 so I don't mind that in blu-ray...
