Default Shopping for me just got easier!

Greetings everybody. Brand new here - in a way. Been lurking for weeks now.

It occurred to me that blu-rays have another added benefit. And here it is...

I don't have to explain to people to buy me the "wide-screen" version of movies anymore.

Every year well meaning relatives have put me in a gift return nightmare as inevitably they buy me the full-screen versions of movies I ask for. You're sitting there opening the gift, internally upset (yet acting gracious) because of their blatant disregard of possibly the most important detail of every movie-phile. Next you have to go down and wait in impossibly long exchange lines hoping that the store will exchange full screen for wide screen without a receipt. I'm sorry I can't go on describing the scenario because I'm beginning to get upset.

Anyhow, NOW all I have to do is say - buy me a BLU-RAY! (Although I do have some relatives who think that Blu-ray is a slang term for porn, which causes an awkward moment as I have to explain what I mean.)

However, it did occur to me that movie studios are illogical (i.e. Paramount), and they just might decide to release full screen versions of films. Please, blu-ray brethren, ease my mind and tell me they can't do that.

I don't think you have to worry. Why would ANY Blu-Ray movie come out in fullscreen when you pretty much have to have an HDTV to watch it, and HDTV means 'wide'?

Fullscreen...HA! I've always hated it. It's just a slap in the face of the filmmakers.

I especially like it when watching a movie on TV and it says "This film has been modified from the original version. It has been formatted to fit your TV." And then I get huge black boxes on either end of my nice widescreen TV.

I totally agree, I hate fullscreen yet people are so ignorant to the fact that probably 5 years from now the bars that were on the top and bottom will now appear on the sides and I will have to say"told ya so"
The only good thing is dvd players have zoom now if you hate the black bars.

HAHA I know exactly how you feel.

It worked with my family. They got me all blu-ray discs.

Now the only thing to look out for are those relatives/friends who know nothing about Blu-ray and buy you an HD-DVD instead! -.-

It took 7 years for my wife's side of the family to realize that after an accumulated wardrobe that I'll never wear and FS movies that have all been exchanged, a gift certificate is all that's necessary.

Welcome to the forums.

Yes. Don't have to worry about the pan and scan releases on blu. Ever. I loved it when widescreen started to be released on DVD and people would ask me "how can I stand those black bars"? I would retaliate with "how can you stand watching a movie with up to 46% of it cut off"? Welcome to the site and stay true blu.

Fullscreen versions of Widescreen movies are just wrong.Would you chop a couple of inches off a Picasso to make it fit the frame? I don't know why it is acceptable with film.People tell me " I don't like the black bars" Why are they watching the bars instead of the film? My eyes don't even register the black bars while I'm watching something.

I agree, I use to hate to look for a wide screen version of a movie, or those dvd's that had 2 sides i full and the other wide

Why anyone would think "Blu-ray" is slang for pr0n is beyond me.

Actually, the studios will probably start releasing (once sales get large enough), a 1:78:1 version of 2:35:1 movies... of course, on Blu-ray, they might be able to fit both...

Can't people just activate the zoom function on their TVs if they want the picture to cover the entire screen, or is it that not all HDTVs have this function?

Wow, I generated a lot of conversation. You people are great. Thanks for the welcome.

I posted the first message, spent an hour+ driving home from work, and was treated to all of this activity.

However, while I was driving I thought of the perfect BDA ad for this Christmas. They could show a montage of all of the blu-ray titles, whilst playing Blue Christmas in the background. Cause, yeah, this Christmas, my wish list will be entirely blu.

Apparently at one time, those kinds of movies were known as blue movies.

Well I sure hope Santa is reading this thread because he'll know that you weren't naughty since you didn't buy HD-DVD but were instead nice and bought Blu-ray. Hope you get many Christmas Blu-rays.

Reminds me of a quote off of Everyone Loves Raymond.

Marie: What is a DVD player?
Ray: C'mon, not now, Ma, please.
Marie: Is it for pornography?
Debra: Yes, Marie, I got Ray a porn machine.
Marie: I don't like that Debra.
