ps3 and 7.1 receiver - Blu-ray Forum

i have a 605 onkyo receiver hook up with hdmi 1.3 cable to my ps3

how do i get the best quality sound from blu ray movies ?
should i set it to bitstream or PCM ?

Bitstream. This is the unchanged digital data from the component to the Receiver, You use PCM if your Receiver doesn't have a DTS/DD decoder.

PCM is a digital signal but your reciever won't detect it as a Dolby or DTS signal, PCM won't give you 8 discreet channels for audio, In most cases I've seen PCM is converted to stereo.

Although youre going in the right direction with the explanation of bitstream and lpcm...

you are incorrect about the PS3 setting for his situation.

The PS3 cannot send a high definition bitstream signal. Which means the only way to listen to Dolby TrueHD (and eventually DTS-HD), you must set the PS3 output to Linear PCM.

Setting bitstream will only send the "core" dolby or dts track. For Lossless audio you will have to set to Linear PCM.

Linear PCM has up to 8 discrete channels, 7.1 PCM to be exact. (for the moment

...and ive never heard of most cases it "being converted to stereo"?!? at least not on purpose!

I was an early adopter for DTS 6.1 and DD EX, so I'm not that excited about 7.1, but seeing that hardly and of the blu-ray titles I've seen have a 7.1 or lossless track on it I don't think it's anything to worry about. I'm very impressed with the sound I get from 6.1.

I had that setup a short while ago. Chances are, since your system does not accept HDMI, you will need to set your PS3 Optical Output setting to Bitstream. That is the only way to get a full surround field through your speakers. My old 6.1 system would only output Lossless PCM tracks as stereo over optical if PS3 Optical Output was set to Linear PCM.

the majority of Bluray titles have at least one Lossless track...weather it be Uncompressed PCM, Dolby TrueHD or DTS -HD MA.

I'm not that well versed on PCM but I've see DTS-ES and DD-EX more than I've seen Master and TrueHD . I've seen alot of uncompressed soundtracks but I think it's going to depend on how well your receiver encodes that PCM signal when it comes time to decide on whether or not DTS/DD sounds better than uncompressed. Those of you with 7.1 receivers, what program do you select to encode surround? DTS's neo:6 or DD's Pro logic? In my experience the digital bitstream still sounds better...If the PCM signal is 8 channels of discreet audio does your receiver just push those channels to the respective speaker?

Sorry warren, you just wanted an answer to your question, lol, and this thread turned into a understanding PCM and bitstream conversation. The answer to your question is going to come from you, the best thing to do is try it both ways and see which one sounds better to you. You will need to understand the capabilities and limitations of your receiver first though.

i ll change it then to pcm
and i know ps3 cant send dts ma and Dolby TrueHD

Edit: I also have another question. If im playing a ps2 game in my ps3 with hdmi cable, and the best sound the game has is Dolby prologic II, do i get it with HDMI or what type of sound do i get ?

From what I understand the PS3 does support both those lossless formats and one of the only early players that could.

The PS2 didn't support surround (DD or DTS) Whatever your receiver does with the sound is as good as it gets I prefer DTS's approach to Prologic and Prologic II, again a personal preference. The original Xbox was the first gaming platform to support digital surround on the fly.

remenber that ps2 had optical out.
and some games has dolby prologic II

yes but pro logic is not true surround, it doesn't support more than two discreet channels of audio, it is more an emulation of surround from a two channel source

dolby prolic yes, but prologic II is a simulation of 5.1 , the rear speakers are not mono like old prologic, they re separate channels
