Default Is the PS3 a receiver?

Alright well I've been wanting to buy a sound system for a long time now and I just have a couple of questions about it. Can the PS3 be used as a receiver? I see sound packages that include a dvd player/receiver so I was just wondering if I could skip buying a receiver but yet again the PS3 doesnt have the speaker inputs and stuff. If I do need a receiver, then how does it all connect(the receiver, the PS3, and the HDTV)? Thanks guys for your help

the ps3 is not a receiver. a receiver receives the various AV inputs from your DVD player, ps3, etc etc and then outputs them to the speakers and your TV. your TV kind of functions as a gimpy receiver because it accepts all of the AV inputs and switches them around, but if you were to buy a separate receiver, the connections would go as such:

PS3 --> receiver --> TV and speakers

PS3 -> HDMI Cable -> Receiver -> HDMI Cable -> TV

If you are interested in better audio, a Receiver is the way to go. Granted, a decent HDMI Receiver will run you about $250+

...then you would also need speakers...

question:

i have a home theatre in a box. i'm thinking of buying a receiver in the near future. would it be okay for me to use the speakers that come with the hometheater in a box temporarily until i am able to afford genuine HT speakers? or would it hurt the speakers since the ohm's would be so high?

No the PS3 is not a reciever, but it can do half of the job of a reciever (that is decode audio codecs). This means that you'll be able to buy an HDMI reciever with or without all of the codecs used by BD's, i.e. DTS HD MA, Dolby TruHD. These are decoded by the PS3 and sent as a PCM signal.

The resistance (the 'ohms') are pretty much irrelevant. Any decent amp (and by that I mean anything that costs more than a cheap HTiB or a TV) will be able to cope with a 4ohm/8ohm load without problems.

The most dangerous thing you can do to a speaker is connect it to an underpowered amp. That's because as you turn a weak amplifier up, the soundwave being pumped down the line (which normally looks like a variation of a sine wave) starts getting the tops and bottoms of the waves squared off. This square wave signal is very dangerous as it puts a lot of stress on the speaker's voice coil and will likely burn it out (as well as sounding terrible). The tweeters in your speakers are especially vulnerable to this sort of damage.

So the short answer is: A high quality amplifier is actually safer to use with your current speakers, but better speakers down the line will obviously improve the sound further.

Just be careful what you buy. I tried to "cheap it out" until I could afford a half decent system and bought a Samsung HTIB.

As it turns out most of the DVD player versions you see in that low end range of 250-450 bucks have some type of a safety feature that cuts power to the channels when you use an external source like a PS3.

Best bet use your money to start buying pieces of your system, dont even waste your time on a HTIB, you'll make a sacrifice now but will be much happier later on.

Edit> This is the POS I bought, lucky for me they returned it NP

Question:

My friend has a DVD player that can be used as a receiver. If I send the audio from the PS3 to the receiver, and then to his speakers (he has two speakers: left and right), will I still be hearing "lossless audio"? He bought the speakers a few months ago, and they seem very nice.

The other option, of course, is to just send the audio and video to the TV via the HDMI cable. But which option will give me better (lossless) audio quality? ...

PS3 audio (red+white cords) >>> Receiver >>> L+R speakers
or
PS3 audio (HDMI cable) >>> HDTV
?

You can only get lossless through HDMI. That is the only way. Red and White cords are analog signals. You won't get too far with those. Optical is better, but still not HDMI. You cannot get lossless through optical either. HDMI only. I hope you get the drift.

The PS3 is like any other device, like a DVD player or VHS player. It decodes the music and either decodes it or bitstreams it and sends it out to a reciever, TV, ect.

Here's a great receiver for ya.

Doesn't decode DTS-HD MA, but I think it does decode PCP.
