I love my PS3 except for one thing, the fan noise. I have had it for a while now and never noticed the fan, until the 1.80 update. The fan goes into its highest speed within 5 minutes of watching a DVD and doesn't slow down until I take the DVD out. I even replaced it for a new one, but as soon as I did a system update it happened again. Should I replace it again? Can anyone help?

Mine is louder but doesn't go into the highest speed, but it is higher than the lowest speed. It's slightly louder than my 360 elite now, but you don't notice it at normal volume levels.

If you have the space, stand the PS3 vertically. It really helps the cooling.

Vertical or horizontal and mine reacts exactly the same.

Last Blu-ray movie I watched with the PS3 vertical, it never even kicked into the 2nd fan speed, stayed at the 1st fan speed the whole time. |

I'm assuming that all of the PS3 units affected use 90nm parts from the original PS3 launch. Right now, only the Korean 80 GB units use 65nm parts.
Also, the fan noise brought about by the 1.81 version update seems to affect only the 90nm PS3s. Other than that, no other problems so far (the Korean owners of PS3s say their 65nm units are damn quiet even with version 1.82 firmware) |

Has anyone had any problems with there PS3. Last night i was watching a DVDR disc
Then put Virtua tennis on. Went to shut down with ps controller and the whole thing locked up. Had to manually shut down at the back and turn back on. Controller wouldnt pick up all lights flashin. Switched off again and it now seem all ok. I have had the PS3 day release in the uk and never had a problem and have all firmware updates |

My PS3 is whisper quiet, bought it at walmart just outside of toronto. I lay the unit on it's side, it is in a open area in the tv stand and is well vented. The unit does get hot but when the fan does come on you can hardly hear it.

I noticed mine gets super loud only when played a dvd, probably because it spins faster. but when watching a blu ray it takes about 2 housr for the high speed fan to kick in. I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building and its super hot up here too. My friend has one that is in the open in his basement and it never gets to the highest speed. Depends on where you live and what not.

The fan kicking on into high drive is completely normal. Its better to be safe than sorry and have the PS3 melt itself down. For me it only does it when watching movies though. |

After reading this site for a long time, I finally made the plunge and got a PS3. Out of the box, I noticed the systems fan kicking in. When playing blu-ray discs, it was fairly loud. When playing a traditional DVD, it was *really* loud. I was hugely dissappointed, since I purchased it as a media player, not so much for the games.
As for my setup, the PS3 (60 GB) is in a cool room, on an open glass componenet shelf - so heat shouldn't be a problem. On quite scenes, from ~8 feet away, you can hear the fans. Have any other PS3 owners noticed this? I know noise is a very subjective thing, so it might be hard to answer (obviously, different people have different hearing, background noise, etc.) Thanks so much for the help. I'm going to try to get a replacement if this isn't normal. |

I just bought a new 80G flavor and it runs constantly cranking out folding@home jobs. I hear slight fan noise when the ambient noise in the room is about zero but it isn't a distraction. I'll throw in some Blu-rays and see if I can make it mad.
Will let you know. |

Mine runs pretty loud too when I play BD (I have no games). I usually have the volume so loud that I cannot hear it or I am wearing headphones (ie when my wife is at home), so I really do not notice it. The guys over at AVS told me that this is really a heat issue, which is pretty obvious, so my main concern was it melting down like the XBOX 360. Last night I went and bought a fan to blow cooler air into vents, and it did not seem to kick into high gear. Of course this introduced the noise of the fan, but at least the PS3 is staying cooler.
