Default PS3 fan noise!

I'm sure i'm not alone. But lately my PS3's been way too loud!... I realize that heat's the problem, but is there anyone who's been able to fix this problem. I've seen cooling-docking-stations, dunno how effective they are. Is this somehting that can be fixed by using those compressed cannisters to blow out the dust inside?

I know the 40 gb has an thing where you can have it blow out the dust, think it works on the 80 gb as well, if your worried about dust and stuff...

The docking cooler fans are completely useless imo. I bought one and returned it a couple days later cause it just makes things worse.

My suggestions:
- Give your PS3 more "breaks" during the summer months. Play for a bit, then let it cool down.
- Turn up the volume so you can't hear the fan. The PS3 will shut off automatically if it gets too hot so you don't have to worry about damaging it.
- Make sure to leave lots of room around it so it can breathe better.

Whats the temperature of the room your PS3 is in and what is the ventilation around the PS3 like?

Well it made a whole bunch of noise. And all it really does is block the hot air that the PS3 internal fan is pushing out. My PS3 worked harder with the fan in there then without it. The ventilation of the PS3 is good enough as it is.

I'd be curious to know how hot the room with your PS3 is too.

Mine, in the summer is usually around 64 degrees. Maybe a bit under 60 in the winter. My house is always pretty cold and we don't even have air conditioning. I live in the basement, in Canada.

I had the same problem when upconverting DVD's. I've gone back and forth with upconver on "normal" and "off" and I can't tell the difference. With upconvert "off" the fan is much quieter. The upconvert option may work depending on the TV you have. I think the scaler in my Pio does a better job than the PS3.

the PS3, is about 3-4 feet away from my living room window. I do have an equipment rack which houses my receiver and the 50" plasma's really close too, so there are a few significant heat sources near the ps3, but plenty of ventilation. i can't always leave my window open though... i live in apts and lossless audio can be a bit disruptive

Is your place warm ? cause that can make the machine's fan work. Also make sure your PS3 has space around for ventilation. I don't hear much my PS3's fan

Live in Phoenix AZ, room kept around 74 by Air conditioning , and no loud noise to speak of (40Gb PS3 bought in March) /shrug.

I have heard of the super-fan trick though (pushing a button to have the PS3 expell all the dust I think).

Ya, I would say it's just getting really hot so the fan is going faster. If you can, maybe try rearranging your setup so the PS3 doesn't get hit with hot air. Either that or turn up the volume until winter comes again.

I haven't FIXED it, but I isolated my PS3 (several months ago) on the bottom shelf of my Theater rack and placed it on top of a VCR with a metal chassis (that is seldom used) which acts as a heatsink.

The noise is greatly diminished this way for me.

If you have the room, I think the ideal way to position your PS3 would be close to the floor in it's vertical standing position. This way, the two main surfaces are exposed to the air around the system.

Good luck and enjoy,

I have the Air-flow cooler on my PS3 with it also sitting on a laptop cooler.(maybe a little much but I have a poor setup for ventilation, but looks nice. Plus being a 360 owner a little parinoid.) I know this is not the answer as these fans make even more noise, but I just crank up the surround sound. I live in Mesa Az. how the heck do you keep the a/c @ 74, mines at 81. haha
