Default NEW (8-24-08) 80GB PS3 Fan Noise

Hi my name is Mario and I'm relatively new to this sight. First of all I must say that I am well aware of the fan noise issues in previous Playstation 3 models and am sure there are previous threads about this issue. However this is not my concern

Well, long story short, I bought a new 80GB PS3 about two weeks before Halloween at a local best buy. When I turned it on, there wasn't any fan noise what so ever. Ear up against the back vents and all I could hear was some air coming out and some HDD noise. Was on for about an hour and a half from initial start up and it ran cool the whole time. The air was luke warm if that and I was thrilled given what I had read about previous fan noise.

Happy and excited for Blu-Ray (only had Iron Man), I jumped on the computer a couple days later to look for good deals on good Blu-Ray movies and stumbled across this site. At the top of the current new bulletins of the day, I came across the Amazon.com deal, buy select blu-ray player and four blu-ray movies and get $100 off total purchase. I wasn't to mad, did some math, and it came out to about the same price I paid for JUST the first playstation 3 (had $50 gift card for bestbuy). I decided to return the first playstation to bestbuy, get my money back, and take up the offer on Amazon.com.

When I finally unpacked the second PS3 and turned it on...yeah you guess it. Fan noise. It certainly was not as loud as earlier models I have listened to, but loud enough to notice the difference from the first one I bought the instant I turned it on. This only bothers me because I had a completely silent one before this one, and found it relaxing compared to my April 2006 XBOX 360.

Before I returned the first one, I wrote down model numers, serial numbers, and manufacturing dates. Compared to the first one, everything is the same except serial numbers, ect. and month manufactured. The first being manufactured in July of 2008 and the second being Manufactured in August of 2008

After searching the internet for hours, I found absolutely no complaints, or any information for that matter, on the fan noise level on the new 80GB PS3. That's when I decided to turn to this site.

So if anyone with a new 80GB PS3 could respond and let me know what the fan noise is like, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm looking to buy a third one to compare and eventually return which ever one is louder. But if anyone has any insight to this, could you please let me know.

Because of the nature of these devices, the efficiency of both heat dissipation as well as noise produced by the actual fan at equivalent speeds will vary from unit to unit. This is normal assuming something isn't actually defective.

I have a launch 60GB and a Metal Gear Solid 80GB unit -- my 60GB is dead silent, my 80GB is fairly loud.
