Default Is my PS3 crapping out? (fan noise)

Hi

got a used 60gig Ps3, noticed that its quiet, except as soon as i start a bluray movie the fan comes on and its somewhate loud. Then after 5-10 mins the fan gets louder and stays on until i eject the movie. I've never played a game on this, so does this mean its starting to crap out?
I use to own a 40gig last year (my memory is bad) but i dont recall a loud noise, i remember it being very quiet

I've read other people on here commenting on the loud fan noise of the PS3 while they are trying to watch a movie, but I've personally never noticed it with my 40 GB.

i noticed mine was getting louder while watching movies also during the summer time, but when I used to put the a/c it used to cool down and during winter time it stays normal the whole time, maybe your house is hot!! that is just my experience

It does that with my 80GB too.
I just get used to the sound after 2 minutes

your 60G is fine, perfectdark.
launch consoles (20/60G) have 90nm processors and typically more fan noise, newer consoles (40/80G) have cooler 65nm chips and typically run quiter.

do you have your ps3 in an open space or do you have it in a cabinet or entertainment center, etc? the ps3 runs pretty hot and it needs room to ventilate, otherwise the fans go into overdrive to prevent the thing from melting itself

Very true. I have an original 20, while it's not at all loud, it's not as quiet as my brother's 40.

By the way, I use my PS3 to watch all my DVDs and Blu-rays, in addition to playing. I've had no issues whatsoever. ::knocking on wood::

give it a good cleaning with a can of compressed air, probably dirty and over-heating.

Clean the PS3 and then while the PS3 is cut off use some 3M Dust Remover with the plastic nozle installed and blow out all the dust buildup in the hole openings on the PS3. I clean mine weekly this should help... Probably why the fan is working harder due to dust buildup...

Hope this helps....

the ps3 manual specifies not to use canned air.

use a vaccuum instead.

if its the old 80gig it will be louder. My 80gig is louder then my bros new metal gear solid bundle 80gig. The fan noise does not bother me. The sound is drowned out by the tv volume. I only hear it when no sound is coming from the tv

A vacuum can cause electrostatic buildup. I'd stick with the canned air.

I have a 60gig and and 80gig and neither one of them makes much noise. I always wondered why some people complain about how much noise it makes.
