Default SONY BDP-S500 FOR UNDER $508 coming in a few months

From one of my reliable sources I have learned that some discount mail order Internet companies within two months will be selling the Sony BDP-S500 for under $508. Retail prices will remain at $699.99 for this player.

The S500 is basically the same as a S300. Until Sony either drops the price of the S500 MORE or adds DTS-MA decoding/ bitstream output, then the price isnt really all that great.....

I know 80% of people here have a PS3 as a player and things load super fast, but that is not an option for me.

I'll consider a second DB player when they finally get the BD-J disc load times back up to snuff.

I hold out hope that firmware will further save my S300, but it is time for Sony to make a FAST kick ass stand alone player. PERIOD.

Once the mail order companies get the BDP-S500 in stock then the difference in street price between the S300 and S500 will be only $100 unless Sony lowers the list price on the S300 by $100.
Since the PS3 40GB is going to sale for $399.99 it would be ideal if Sony were to lower the price on the S300 to a list price of $399.99.
If Sony wants to get this war over faster and prevent the flood of combo players in late 2008 it would be ideal if the Sony BDP-S300 could be sold for $199.99. At the very minimum the BDP-S300 should be sold at $299.99 which would be $100 less then the PS3 40GB model. At least one standalone BLU-RAY player should be priced cheaper then the PS3. Most people will just buy the PS3 since it is the cheapest standalone player.

All Sony needs to do to make a good standalone player is to offer a redesigned PS3 player that physically has the same case as a standalone player. If Sony were to just make a new model of PS3 that looked like a standalone player then this would be very attractive with fast load times.

That sounds good but Sony would sell less PS3 which isn't good for business for them.

It would be a bad idea for Sony to gut PS3 and put in Stand alone at same price. Many that use BR go PS3 in turn More PS3 sell....It's all about games and money they will make from future gamers f,sure.
PS3 is there big money maker and they wont shoot there selves in the foot.

heheh It would be nice if there was a blank housing that you could put PS3 goodies into for standalone look...add a couple whisper quiet fans and call it heaven

I guess you are not aware that they are loosing money on every PS3 sold, as does every game system manafacturer. The gaming division lost $237 million in just the first quater. So if that continues that will be almost a $1 billion loss for the year. A real money maker.

More people than you think do not want a PS3 as part of their HT system. Since it does not have analog outs. Uses bluetooth for a remote, I know that can be solved easly. And if they have kids in the house donot want a gaming system hooked up in the living room.

It is a choice they would have to make that is not bad business for them but what they want to support. If they made a standalone that was a rebagged PS3 then that would help Blu-ray standalone sales. It might hurt PS3 sales some, but that cannot be proven either way. Since the latest survey of PS3 owners said that 60% did not know it could play Blu-ray, I would say that 6-10 did not buy it a player but as a game machine. Granted I am not sure where they found these people but they did. So that would mean 40% bought it knew it would play Blu-ray how many of those bought is just because of it? There is the real question and those are the ones that would be lost to the standalone. Those that bought it only to be a player.

I hope you know gaming systems make money off games and there are many to come in the very near future PS3,s way.

That is true yet you will find more and more BR users going PS3 due to load times and firmware updates being on time. For the middle class with a couple young kids and Disney movies in BR it a perfect match because of cost. 399.99 is a great price and your getting more.Dont forget the new games..That is were Sony is making the big money.

I see your points yet your not understanding that Stand alones are a dime a dozen in Sonys eye. There PS3 line is there bread and butter....And once again 'IT,S ALL ABOUT THE GAMES' they will sell in the very near future.
If sony released a BR standalone at the same price as PS3 with same load times and updates PS3 would sink and they would sell no..You know the answer

P.S
Dont forget sony owns a movie Company which promotes BR..Lots of money there for them.PS3 load times and price sell more movies .They want that sucker in every living room.
Look For Blockbuster Video renting PS3s turning more onto BR and...You know the answer.

I guess those mail order companies won't be making a whole lot of profit on these units, since at one of the biggest retailers in the U.S., the BDP-S500 has a cost of $465. Those same mail order companies will probably have to buy it for even more money, since they're not getting a huge order.
