Talking Home Media Magazine: Blu-ray maintains edge despite 'Transformers'

click on link for entire article:

http://www.homemediamagazine.com/index.cfm

Quote:
Blu-ray Disc maintains its edge in the format war with rival next-gen contender HD DVD, with Blu-ray titles outselling HD DVD titles by a margin of almost two to one in the first nine months of this year.

According to a study by Home Media Magazine’s market research department, consumers bought 2.6 million Blu-ray Discs this year through Sept. 30, and just 1.4 million HD DVD discs.

Blu-ray Disc titles began outselling HD DVD titles early in the year and have consistently maintained an edge, week after week. Even Paramount Home Entertainment’s release of the DreamWorks theatrical blockbuster Transformers exclusively on the HD DVD format didn’t tip the scale last week. Though there was no hot new Blu-ray Disc release, consumers continued to buy more Blu-ray Discs than HD DVDs for the week ended Oct. 21, albeit by a slim 51% to 49% edge. Paramount says Transformers sold 190,000 units its first week in stores, but Home Media Magazine market research and studio estimates puts the actual number of units that sold through to consumers closer to 115,000.

oh snap! thats a fairly poor showing for transformers. only 110k! given there were about 20 blu-rays for the BOGO as long as they sold about 5000 a piece we should be fine. but seriously toshiba 110k for your big, big, big release is poor even if they went for 30 bucks a pop thats only 3.3 million in revenue which you spend 150 million to get!

god if its 51:49 that will be the ultimate insult to them. they will be screaming that Sony and the BDA paid for Nielsen to track "inaccurat" numbers and thats why they only got 115k. However, it should be noted that if Nielsen got 115k and that does not include wal mart the 190k is probably not so far fetched. they then only multiplied their sales by 1.5 in the press release instead of 2, you Fn liars Paramounted*****.

This is the magazine that posts the Nielson #'s, apparently they get the #'s before Friday but don't normally report them till Friday.
This is official. 51 to 49 blu. Close, but the space robots were forced to walk the plank by the superior and far cooler pirates. rrrrr
Once again, hd dvd makes up untrue statistics and facts. Toshiba with their 51gb discs, Paramount with their hd dvd fictional superiority study and Transformers #'s increased by over 60%, and Universal with their bogus Spielberg release announcements. How could anyone trust the hd dvd camp in regards to anything they say? They are as full of hot air as the fanatical consumers that so rabidly defend them.
I'll be interested to see how they try to transform this into positive spin.

That's classic.
For some silly reason I keep thinking of The Emperor from Star Wars, "Now, witness the power of this fully armed and operational battle station."

Launch Spiderman, Ratatouille, Cars, Die Hard 4.0, Pirates 3, etc...

Now that is awesome news!

IS the final number though going to be 51-49... or perhaps maybe a little better in favor of Blu-ray?

Either way, that is f&*&n great!

what pisses me off, is there will be some type of press release out of the hd dvd camp. that says well, we lost round 1, but there are many other big hits exclusive to hd dvd, with hits like shrek the third, the bourne ultimatium, and star trek, there is much more coming to hd dvd this holiday season. oh yeah and they will also throw in some warner titles like blade runner and harry potter and try to make it sound like those flicks are exclusive too.

Trust me, the it only get better and better from here! This was the most dangerous week, and since most HD-DVD titles don't have legs, Transformers sales will drop off. Then all of the big Blu-ray titles are coming out starting next week, so Blu should be handing them their arses every week til the end of the year!
