I work with Microsoft software all day long, everyday, as an IT Network Systems administrator, and part of my job is to ensure our Servers and Workstations are protected from Viruses, Worms, Windows Vulnerabilities, cracking, etc. We have done a great job of keeping our machines safe, however over the past 6 years we have had 3 major issues with worms and vulnerabilities.
HD DVD is under the Microsoft camp, and Microsoft being the most hacked, cracked software, not to mention the vast majority of Viruses, Worms, etc., are written against Microsoft software. Over 90+% of them. I've read up on it some, but many of these guys do it either for the thrill. But many also because they either don't like Microsoft, &/or because they are such an easy target with all the flaws in the OS and Apps. That's why you rarely hear about these types of issues with Mac/Apple computers, Unix, and Sun Microsystems, who just happen to be the ones you wrote & develop Java...which is what BD-J uses. I feel much more safer with Blu-ray when it comes to connecting to the internet, because they don't have to be as concerned about this kinds of issues that Microsoft (myself at work) faces everyday. With the HD DVD internet connectivety, even if they were to pull off a Miracle and win this war (which isn't going to happen), I would not feel safe plugging a Toshiba/Microsoft HD DVD player into the internet. I think Blu-ray with Java & non-Microsoft internet influenced connectivety is much safer to go with. Here's a section of Wikipedia that re-enforces this for me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_virus "...The users of Microsoft software (especially networking software such as Microsoft Outlook and Internet Explorer) are especially vulnerable to the spread of viruses. Microsoft software is targeted by virus writers due to their desktop dominance, and is often criticized for including many errors and holes for virus writers to exploit. Integrated applications (such as Microsoft Office) and applications with scripting languages with access to the file system (for example Visual Basic Script (VBS), and applications with networking features) are also particularly vulnerable. Although Windows is by far the most popular operating system for virus writers, some viruses also exist on other platforms. Any operating system that allows third-party programs to run can theoretically run viruses. ..." I would feel safe on Sony / Blu-ray connected to the internet, but would you feel safe connecting with HD DVD / Toshiba / Microsoft? |
