Default i finally get it.

I understand the hd dvd stradegy now. we've always said that if you can afford an 1080p set and all that that you can afford the little extra money to step up to blu ray. hd dvd has now realized that they are losing and losing big. more hd dvd people are going dual format ''purple'' every day. now with this $99 player they are now attempting to lure blu ray supporters to go ''purple'' as well. their ad campaign should be ''if you can afford a 1080p setup with a blu ray player, you can afford a littl tiny expense like a $99 hd dvd player''.

resist my brothers. resist. I too am tempted by this ''deal'' but I refuse to settle for this crap. sure I would love to watch transformers and serenity but I will not settle for second rate technology.

this may be a redundant statement but I wanted to say it.

That could be part of their strategy.

I'm not tempted. I want the war to end so we can begin to chip away at the real enemy - SD-DVD.

I think the strategy is moreso aimed at the "good enough" HD buyers that will be out and about this holiday season.

Think about the 45 year old woman shopping for her husband who wants an HDTV and a high def player of some sort. She sees a 46" 1080p for $3000, right next to it is a 46" Vizio for $700, what will she buy?

Okay, the TV is purchased, now she needs a player. Well, here's one for $400, but here's one right beside it for $100. Guaranteed she'll buy the $100 player, oblivious as to which movies are available on which format.

No doubt they'll move plenty of players, but it most likely won't be enough to make any significant impact on the overall outcome of the "war."

A sound observation Buckshot!!!!! It really makes sense to me. Now we must wear a crucifix and a necklace made of the garlic flower to keep HD DVD from sucking the life out of all things Blu-ray!!!

Well blu ray is for technology educated folk. Meanwhile Hd DVD is for the mediocrity.

Well, if you are solely after the "cheap" guys, then rest assured that once she realizes that the "cheap" $100 player requires her to purchase $30 discs then guess what will she do? She will end up with Apex in her basket. No, Blu-ray will be fullish to fall into this trap. I am fully OK with the current Blu pricing strategy. Keep the hardware at a decent price level (where they are now), and gradualy reduce the media pricing. That's when the revenues are.

No, it seems to me their strategy is to get people excited about a HD player at $99 (or $169 for BF A3), get them to the store with buying HD DVD in mind, and then operate a Bait and Switch because they know they do not have large numbers in stock at this price.
At this point, they are counting on the customer saying, "ah well, it's out of stock. I really want a HD player though, and that one is supposedly "better" at $199/$299. It's only $$ more, screw that, I'm getting it."

Classic large retail store bait and switch tactic.

Now, I hope they get called on it, and that it comes right back to bite em where it hurts, with people p'offed and buying PS3's or BDS300 instead.

A cheap price can also get the opposite reaction. If they price it too low, people will be suspicious. If they see all the other players for 100s more, they'll wonder why this one player is so cheap. Most people I know refuse to buy the cheapest--unless they know for sure that it's just a fantastic sale and not a cheap piece of crap.

WOW! I totally missed that! You're right, it is stealing the thunder from the Spidey release. What will be funny, though, is when people go to their local Walmart to pick up their $98 player and then to their local BB to buy their child's favorite films (Disney, Spiderman, etc.,) and find out their "new" player doesn't play them. Add to that the anger they're going to feel when they realize that every movie they want costs 1/3 the price of their player, that they can't rent their movies on their format at their local Blockbuster, and finally that all the new movies being released won't play on it, and what do you think is going to happen then? That's right, we'll be here with open arms, ready to accept our new brethren...

Oooohh, you're right I never thought of this. It seems that the $98 dollar player is the BOGO for HD DVD so everybody will be talking about HD DVD instead of the biggest Blu-ray release in the 4th quarter.

What the hell is everyone so worried about? Even with the amount of hardware they have sold thus far we have continued to outsell them with hardware(PS3) and with software as well. WB is the key here and if we continue to outsell them with Warner we may be over to have them side with Blu and end this war once and for all.

It's funny to read AVS. A lot of HD-DVD people are going to try and buy their second player at $98. Think that will constitute more disc sales? Nope. Some people may think they are getting a player that will turn their DVD's into HD. Those are not going to make up more disc sales. Then there are only going to be a handful of these players available as the inventory is run out. There is NOTHING to be worried about. HD-DVD players themselves are now in the bargain bin. Forget the movies. The format is trash.

I will *never* own an HD DVD deck.

It's not that hard to do. It's quite easy actually.

This is their last ditch effort. With X-mas just around the corner they know this is their last chance to get as many HD-DVD players into homes as possible. Once in homes, people buy the movies (obviously).

It isn't Wal-Mart behind this HUGE price cut. Wal-Mart's Black Friday sales are usually much less. Because Wal-Mart buys in such bulk, Toshiba worked out a deal and is basically taking an hit at $98. They were able to make up for some of the lost profit with distributing costs.

Our Trojan Horse was the PS3, their's will be this $98 piece of crap.

This is basically HD-DVD going "all in" on Black Friday. Left over units come the following Saturday will mean they lost the hand. Sold out everywhere... well, then boys, we got a (small) problem.

I liked your analysis of how HD DVD fanboys are going through the 5 stages of GRIEF better.
