Default Can I play blu-ray with my PS3 using component?

I have a plasma that does not have a HDMI input. Will I be able to play blu-ray discs using my component cables?

Thank you.

Ambro.

480i/p, 720p,1080i via component.

you would need HDMI cable if for 1080p.

Yes, the PS3 uses a proprietary PlayStation plug and port for analogue AV connections so unless you've already got a PS2 component cable which is basically the same, you'll need one of these:

you can always get an HDMI switcher:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/se...r&keyword=hdmi

that would probably be your best bet for what you need. this site sells them the cheapest and also sells HDMI cables cheapest too.. getting one of these switchers basically adds a HDMI input to your tv (to the best of my knowledge)

heres the link for the hdmi's

HDMI switcher is useless for someone with no hdmi inputs on his TV.

He doesn't need a switcher. It's not that he doesn't have a free HDMI input, it's that he doesn't have any at all.

Component cables can aslo output 1080p as long as your TV can accept 1080p through component input. Not too many sets can do that though. I know for a fact that my Sharp Aquos can(I use HDMI) and the older 1080p sets that didn't have HDMI inputs.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I am glad to hear that I will be able to play blu-ray disc at least at 1080i. I was reading in the ps3 manual that the ps3 will not play blu-ray discs at 1080p unless you have a HDMI input.

No. HDMI is better even when delivering 1080i. Componet video has less detail in dark movie scenes on my set then HDMI. There is an unecessary D/A then A/D conversion by not using HDMI. So there will be some signal loss along the way if you choose analogue.

For PS3 games, you can use either component or HDMI to get 1080p if the HDTV and the game support it.

For BD movies, you can only get 1080p using HDMI.

I just purchased a ps3 and a HDTV. I'm using component wires with my ps3 and a 32'' samsung 720p tv. While watching certain standard dvds, I can occasionally see faint green and red bars slowly scrolling from the bottom to the top of the screen. I don't notice it with all dvds and I haven't noticed it at all with blu-ray discs. Some television shows do it but I'm just using composite wires with my cable box for the moment, so I'm assuming that is the problem with the cable shows. What are the faint lines with the standard dvds and what can I do to possibly fix the problem? Thanks.

Are you using a PS3 cable/component wire set? Or something else?

Make sure everything is seated correctly. If you can try it on another tv/monitor do that and see if the problem persists. If it does, it's either the hardware or the cable.
