Default If you play ps2/psone on ps3...use component.

I have about 20 titles on ps2 that i still enjoy, and decided to try them out via my shiney new ps3. Instantly I noticed that via HDMI these were forced to 480p, but the result were less than satisfactory. I don't know whats going on inside the ps3, but when you use HDMI and ity has to output a 480i source it just turns it to pure blurr.

SO I decided to try out component, since i've had good luck with it on xbox360 and my cable boxes. It looks the same on the Blu-Ray movies and Resistance, Motorstorm demo...but my psone, ps2 games look better than ever. They are upscaled to 480p (all of them) unless you go in and select "custom" and de-select 480p otherwise it adds a softness to games that are native 480i. I never thought i'd say I have a ps3 via y-pb-pr...but it fits the bill and I will leave it this way until sony releases an update that can adress these issues (if ever).

Until then, I feel like i'm losing nothing, the picture is clear and crisp and there is zero interferance. I suggest anyone interested in a lil old school gaming as well as new, use this method...or leave both connected and switch between them in the dashboard (more work than I was prepared to do).

Do you think this would affect PAL games? Is it something that possibly only affects NTSC games?

As with the 720p issue, I am certain Sony will release a patch. As some of you have already pointed out, you are effectively "beta" testers; there is no way Sony could replicate every tv set up that people use, so by finding out these issues, Sony can update the firmware to resolve these problems.

Brian: You and me posted this kind of thing at almost the same time!

I am not real thrilled with this forced 480p because, in some cases, it just doesn't look good.

The PS3 cannot and does not output 480i over HDMI.

If they ever implement that, the PS3 will become the new darling digital transport for a lot of home theater people to connect it to their fancy uber thousands of dollars external video processors and the like.

Sony should do it. If they really want to have folks outside of gaming go ga-ga over this machine, 480i over HDMI will do it for them. That would be huge.

For PS2 games, unless the game itself has the built in 480p (God of War, Guitar Hero 2, etc.) I find that I prefer to let the games stay at 480i and simply let my TV have a field day with it.

I may very well go out and get the component cables today for laughs.

Basically it's almost like treating the PS3 as two seperate machines: Use component for the old stuff, use HDMI for the new hotness.

No big deal.

I can't get my ps3 even on component to display 480i for ps2 games. maybe I have to go in and change the resolution, but even with component I'm still getting a forced 480p, but the results are IMO better than even the ps2 outputting 480i, then letting the tv do the work. My games seemed crip and the colors jumped off the screen with the two games I tryed: "Metal SLug X-psone" & "Marvel vs. Capcom 2-ps2" I reccomend component highly, and as I said I don't feel like I lost anything from blu-ray play-back or ps3 games.

Do me a favor: Go into your display settings, make sure it's set to component, hit manual, and uncheck every resolution that you can.

I want to see if this thing puts out 480i AT ALL for older games before I bother. I can't imagine how or why there would be any differences at all in PQ if there's still a forced 480p regardless of connection. If that's really the case, I won't bother.

I want 480i so I can let my TV do all the chores on old games.

Thanks!

This is very dissapointing as I'm limited by the connections I can pick and would rather stick with HDMI.

Via component cables the only options that are available are, 480p, 1080i, 720p, 1080p.
unless you select "custom" and then choose ntsc standard...then it will output 480i.

If you set your ps3 to 720p. your BD's will still output 1080i and your ps2 games will get upconverted to 480p.

However I think ps2 games that are interlaced (480i) look far better output 480i than being "upconverted" by the player. Playing marvel vs. capcom 2 again now reveals much better detail than even my previous test. upscaling softens the picture noticeably. So when in the custom settings area I have de-selected 480p and all is good.

U can still go in and select 480p on ps2 games that support it by holding triangle & x during startup, but it yeilds the same results as the forced 480p. games that i thought looked better scaled in my ps2 now I feel look better at 480i on the ps3, and look better than they did scaled on ps2. Does that make sense?

could be that my Tv's scaler is just that good. or that the ps3 does a kick ass job outputting 480i. and not so swell on 480p.

^^ Agreed 100 percent.

Footnote: My CRT Tube XBR960 accepts and displays all resolutions except 1080p.

720p discs DO play in 720p on my XBR960, no sweat. BD discs play in 1080i no matter what, which is what I prefer anyways.

So all is well on my end, except I might consider getting these component cables for PS2 games at some point.

Supposedly the next firmware is coming out on December 8. We'll see what that covers.

I think some of the stuff we are dealing with are just minor oversights that will be corrected down the road. But I doubt we'll ever see 480i over HDMI. But...if we do that will be a great thing for this!

Very minor oversights. The system hasn't even been out two full weeks yet.

I actually wrote SCEA again and mentioned all of this and I did mention 480i over HDMI and why that would be such a boon for them. My parting tag line was: "If you really want to have a nice large group of non gamers with big wallets buy PS3's in droves, this is how you do it and why" and I briefly spelled out the whole digital transport to external video processors bit.

$500-$600 for a quality BD player and digital transport like that is a no brainer cake walk and drop in the bucket for the kinds of guys I'm talking about.

You think thebland or guys like that even feel $600?

Because of the price, the average gamer will take longer to get on board even though the big games coming out in 2007 will bring them over in droves.

The home enthusiast is the other side of the coin. Find a way to attract some of those guys and you start catching up to the 360 that much faster.
