I can't get my ps3 even on component to display 480i for ps2 games. maybe I have to go in and change the resolution, but even with component I'm still getting a forced 480p, but the results are IMO better than even the ps2 outputting 480i, then letting the tv do the work. My games seemed crip and the colors jumped off the screen with the two games I tryed: "Metal SLug X-psone" & "Marvel vs. Capcom 2-ps2" I reccomend component highly, and as I said I don't feel like I lost anything from blu-ray play-back or ps3 games.
