Default Sony halves cost of PS3 development kit

More significant price reductions on the way, says SCEI

Sony has slashed the price of the PlayStation 3 development kit by almost half, promising to further reduce costs as more studios adopt the console technology.

The PlayStation 3 Reference Tool will now be available for JPY 950,000 in Japan, USD 10,250 in North America and EUR 7500 in Europe.

"As more and more new titles are developed for the PS3 format, SCEI will significantly reduce the price of the Reference Tool in order to contribute to the cost saving measures of the development community," said the company.

The console giant has also begun to integrate new programming tools into the PlayStation 3 Software Development Kit from SN Systems, including ProDG, SN Distributed Build System, SN Linker and SN Compiler.

As well as new tools, Sony has also added programming functions to the PS3 Debugging Station allowing it to be used alongside the Reference Tool, rather than being used as just a quality assurance system for games in development.

2008 will be a defining year for PS3 and blu-ray. I just can't see it going wrong. Clearly a lot of people have been wanting to buy a PS3 but not at the original price, now consumers and developers can get into PS3 for a lot less than before.

All I want now is Home and some new music visualisations (preferably ones that have the option to include stored photos too)

hopefully it doesn't take them long to lower their price.

Although since they did just do a price drop they should do more package deals.

FREE 300 with any ps3 buy ;p

Warner's sales will be through the roof ;D

I agree. It really sounds like Sony's trying to be more supportive of developers... I hope this translates into the PS3 being the lead platform for more games.

I'm glad sony did this. It takes time for people to get the hang of new technology.

I sure hope this means more content on the PS3 soon.

The ps3 has a very good lineup of games between now and the end of the year. We need to get Home going. Sony needs to get the dualshock 3 over here in the states. Other then those two issues and future firmware updates, I don't know what more sony can do for the ps3. We have a newer model at an affordable price. Microsoft is going to combat all this some how, maybe.

Microsoft will inevitably pay more and more money to try and keep their system ahead of the PS3. This will be like Microsoft paying off Paramount for exclusive HD-DVD support, or Microsoft paying off Rockstar for a Grand Theft Auto IV exclusive level.

The way I see it, the PS3 is still lacking in games, exclusive or not. The only thing most PS3's have is PS2 game playback (game-wise). But with a lower price on the development kit, more studios should be able to start developing games and other content for the PS3.
I agree, we need Home and the DualShock 3! Also a few other upgrades on the firmware (like folders, DTS HD MA, etc.) would help. But I still think we need more titles or the PS3 to help promote not only the PS3, but also Blu-ray even more.

Xbox 360 had terrible games at launch, and it took about a year to get good games for that system. Then they have this (silly) add-on HD drive. PS3 was a great machine even for people that bought it early. I bought mine when they went to $499, and I got 5 free movies. Actually, one of the movies was "Species", so make that 4 free movies.

Hopefully the smaller independent developers will be able to afford the kits now and create some interesting games.

What we need also are exclusive games such as Uncharted Drake's Fortune and Gran Turismo because if the game is exclusive then playing it on the ps3 is the only way to go.

Ok now all we need is the wii to put the 360 in 2nd which will be soon and then the ps3 to put the 360 in third and if it does really well the wii will be 2nd.

The ps3 has to beat the wii. How to do this, I don't know. The wii is nearly untouchable.

Wii is only untouchable as far as price goes. PS3 is just about future-proof. That means Wii owners will grow tired of Standard Resolution games, and graduate to a PS3.

I own a Wii, and it's great, but it's not a next-gen console.

Not everyone will because of two reasons: 1) Can't afford a next gen console or 2) Not interested in either Nintendo or Microsoft.

This is great news as it gets more developers making games. I don't know if it will develop into lowered console prices though. They've already dropped console prices twice in the first year which is unheard of in this industry.

I don't disagree. I figure the cost to build is close to where they are now, they probably can't afford to bleed for much longer. But lower prices are good for us or at least people that don't already have one.

A low price is only half the battle. If you have a low price, that won't do any good unless there are games and services for the ps3.
