Default Recommended System for the kids... The PS2?

I was talking to a buddy of mine who was considering buying a Wii. He has a standard definition TV and the system would mostly be for his son. As I talked to him I worked in a number of positives about the PS3. As many here already understand, it's the best value for all of the systems out there.

A few days later I talked to him again and he came to the decision to buy a PS2. As he described the thought process it made all the sense in the world! His kid is what he referred to as "heavy handed" and since the system was for him, it would be easier to take if a $100 system got broken rather than the $400 one. He's not considering HD for another few years and in the meantime, the games he buys will be cheaper and will still be usable on the PS3 when he eventually buys one.

Hard to argue with this logic and it keeps money away from Nintendo and M$. Did I miss anything in my argument to him that you think is a compelling reason, in his situation, to step up to the PS3 now?

Well it is true, the PS2 is a great deal right now.
if his kid isn't picky about titles and such, the PS2 is perfect.
If he wants the latest titles, the Wii would be a better answer.
Besides, the Wii is not $400, it is only $250. But there is one other drawback to this... the Wii is IMPOSSIBLE to find before Christmas. I'd tell him to look for one, but don't count on it.

as for the PS3, if he isn't ready for it, I don't think there is much to do to convince him to buy it... yet. Keep on him and maybe he will join the PS3 crowd in 2008. Show him some BD movies. Invite him over to play some PS3 games.
Sure it can handle HD, but it also plays on SD. Still... it is a bit pricey for some right now, especially if he only wants a console for his kid.

This is the same issue with the PSP and the DS. Which one would you rather have a kid destroy.

My son uses a DS. I see no reason to connect the two. He's also got my old PS2 in his room with plenty of games to choose from so he can avoid wrecking my PS3!

I was speaking of the PS3 when I talked about the $400 system. The Wii in his logic was a waste because he'd end up with a console he wouldn't be using in a few years and all the games would be mothballed. With the PS2 games he'd have those still available.

His TV is SD so he's getting those movies on DVD. I suppose the argument could be made that he'd need to purchase those movies again to see them in HD but that isn't the kind of guy he is. I think he'd be happy with his DVD's upscaled for most of the movies he owns then in SD.

I disagree. To be perfectly honest the Wii has maybe a handful of truly good games. The PS2 has hundreds. The PS2 hardware and software are both way cheaper. His best bet is a PS2 for sure, even if he can find a wii.

On top of all of that, very few Wii games have graphics comparable to the PS2.

the only problem that i see with the ps2 is the system is dated. When Sony pulls their support, new 1st and 3rd party games will vanish and stores will close sections to make room for the xbox 360, ps3 and wii selections. Right now the ps3 doesn't have a lot of E-rated games, so the wii would be the present choice, but the ps3 would be the choice if you are planning into the future.

stores like EB games still have xbox1 and gc sections. I doubt the PS2 section would dissapear anytime soon considering their are lots of PS2 new releases.

Also Sony didnt pull hardware support for the PS1 until a few years after the PS2 came out. They will likely support the PS2 (atleast hardware wise) for another 2-3 years. And Developers will continuento release games for another 1-2 years at the very least. Besides even if they cut game support today it would still take 2+ years to play though all the best games.

PS2 is a great choice. It's got a trickload of great games, and still soem more new ones on the way. In time, it will see less shelf space, but online stores and ebay will still have plenty of top-notch PS2 games readily available.

I personally still buy PS2 games. The PS2, I believe, has the biggest library of games ever. It makes sense money wise, the system is cheap and games are inexpensive. Some people really don't care about HD, so they forget that in making their purchases.

One thing to consider perhaps,...

If you have a local Gamestop, they may have excellent used Ps2 games for $1 and up.

I bought a game I love, NFL2k3 which won all kinds of awards when it was released for $0.99. More recently I compared it to Madden 07 for PS3 and I actually like 2K3 better.

So,.. if he's like me and wants his gaming dollar to net great games for low prices, the Ps2 makes a lot of sense.

(Of course,.. I don't have a PS2 but I play some Ps2 games on my PS3.)

+1 There are literally over 5000 titles for the PS2.

depends on the age of your kids.

I think the Wii is good up to 15.
(that does not mean adults will not enjoy it though.)
It's just very young kid friendly.

PS2 I would say 12 and up.

I could not agree more my kid brother (8yrs old) has been wanting a new console and 129.99 for a PS2 with all it's available games was a steal over buying him a Wii and fearing for all the flying controllers The PS2 has more then enough family friendly software and cartoonish games for him to play.

As much as I would love to see another PS3 out there and a whole shit ton stack of Blus sitting right next to it, his logic makes sense. It is still a sony product so I really cant get mad at that. Hopefully he will hit the PS3 as the child grows up. Later is better than never!

I think that PS2 is a good choice too......

Developers like Naughty Dog and others have a ton of games for kids under 12

If his son is "heavy handed" does he really want to give him a controller that he has to wave around or punch around vigorously while playing? He could lose the tv, ding the walls, smash some china with the Wiimote.

Get the PS2

Not to mention that you won't have to pay for batteries for the PS2 controllers either.
