Default Info on HDMI 1.3 from HDMI Licensing, LLC

Here's the most current information on the new HDMI 1.3 Standard being adopted by multitudes of manufacturers. 'Interested in knowing more ?' (from Starship Troopers!). You can go to http://www.HDMI.org . I would recommend you take the online Instruction Course and Test and then you'll better understand why this is the finest interconnect device. Yes I passed the exam !!! 100% correct.

Here the info. for you:

With the launch of HDMI version 1.3, HDMI continues to increase its overall functionality to meet the needs of the High-Definition marketplace.
HDMI 1.3 will include the following new features:

Higher speed: HDMI 1.3 increases its single-link bandwidth from 165MHz (4.95 gigabits per second) to 340 MHz (10.2 Gbps) to support the demands of future high definition display devices, such as higher resolutions, Deep Color and high frame rates. In addition, built into the HDMI 1.3 specification is the technical foundation that will let future versions of HDMI reach significantly higher speeds.

Deep Color: HDMI 1.3 supports 30-bit, 36-bit and 48-bit (RGB or YCbCr) color depths, up from the 24-bit depths in previous versions of the HDMI specification.

Lets HDTVs and other displays go from million of colors to billions of colors.
Eliminates on-screen color banding, for smooth tonal transitions and subtle gradations between colors.
Enables increased contrast ratio
Can represent many times more shades of gray between black and white
At 30-bit pixel depth, a four times improvement would be the minimum, and the typical improvement would be eight times or more.
Broader color space: HDMI 1.3 removes all limits on color selection

Next-generation “xvYCC” color space supports 1.8 times as many colors as existing HDTV signals
Lets HDTVs display colors more accurately
Enables displays with natural, vivid colors
New mini connector: With small portable devices such as HD camcorders and still cameras demanding seamless connectivity to HDTVs, HDMI 1.3 offers a new, smaller form factor connector option.

Lip Sync: Because consumer electronics devices are using increasingly complex digital signal processing to enhance the clarity and detail of the content, synchronization of video and audio in user devices has become a greater challenge and could potentially require complex end-user adjustments. HDMI 1.3 incorporates an automatic video/audio synching capability that allows devices to perform this synchronization automatically with total accuracy.

New lossless audio formats: In addition to HDMI’s current ability to support high-bandwidth uncompressed digital audio and all currently-available compressed formats (such as Dolby Digital and DTS), HDMI 1.3 adds additional support for new, lossless compressed digital audio formats Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD.

Jim, I've heard a few silent murmurs about the idea of HDMI 2.0 coming around in about 18 months or so from a few sources.

Mean anything to you?

Oh man, can't they just put out a product that does everything it's supposed to without the need for upgrading yet another time?

Trust me: When I heard that, no one groaned more loudly than I did.

But this little nugget came from someone that I deem about as rock solid on these things as it gets.

That's why I've been telling you and some others: Don't rush into this HDMI 1.3 thing. Take it slow and easy.

Never thought I'd see the day when a connection type rivaled computer software for revisionism.

I spoke directly with the folks of HDMI Licensing, LLC at their booth in Denver and we had a very long an interesting chat, and 'nothing' was mentioned about a new 2.0 standard coming out next year. Feel free to go onto the site http://www.HDMI.org and go to contact, send an email and wait for your answers. Best to get it right from the horse's mouth, than rumors. Once you decide to view the instruction and test, you'll wonder what improvements they can make that the 1.3 standard didn't already cover. I hate rumors!!!

Believe me: None of us were thrilled at even the prospect of it, including my source.

Nice link!

Default Have you heard of HDMI 1.3 CEC enabling feature?

One of the nice features within the HDMI 1.3 chipset is called CEC, which means Consumer Electronic Control. All HDMI 1.3 CEC enabled Displays, DVD Players, Pre-Amps and Receivers, Satellite and Cable Boxes using this chipset and interconnecting, will be able to allow the consumer to have total system control using any one single remote within their compliment of remotes. To better understand how this will be working, go to http://www.HDMI.org click on HDMI Course and Test, then click on CEC (Left Column) and it will clearly explain exactly what this feature will do. Another thing to drool over

Oh thats finally coming out. It has been rumored for a long time. I don't know how well that'll actually work just like I don't know how well the whole lip synching thing will really work. My guess is that if they do come out with 2.0 it'll have improved connectors that don't fall out as part of the standard.

Well, follow my link to HDMI Licensing, LLC . . . read and you will . That's why engineers are paid six digit figures to make these things work !!! If CEC is implemented into the products I mentioned in my post above, this will simplify system operation for the consumer. The universal Remote companies will not like this feature though !! This will be a wait and see game and you can be certain it will not be available this year. Watch though for companies that have multiple A/V products to use CEC and make the consumer's life easier. Hmmm . . . How about 'Voice activated CEC" ?

CEC = Consumer Electronic Control (Part of the HDMI 1.3 Standard) It is however, optional to the manufacturers whether to include CEC functionality in their product lines. Some will (higher end) and some won't (entry level).

As for me, I doubt it.

Assuming that a new version gets released every 12 months, HDMI 2.0 won't happen till like 2012 or 2013.
