Default set up questions

ok..just got the blu ray player. A few ???

is the HDMI cable necessary? or can you get by w/ the s-video?

if the HDMI is necessary, my receiver does not have an input for it. Can i hook directly into the tv and still route the sound through my receiver?

thanks

HDMI necessary? No, you can use whatever cable will plug into the back of the player and your TV. If you go with S-video though you will only get a 480p quality picture. I recommend going with a COMPONENT video cable and either OPTICAL or COAX DIGITAL cable for the sound. Both should easily connect to both your receiver and TV.

HDMI would be a heck of a lot better than S-video (Use at least Component)

You can get some good HDMI cables from monoprice.com

and yes you can connect HDMI directly to the TV and then optical or RCA cables to the receiver for audio (optical is better than RCA)

First of all welcome the Blu-ray.com...the view is lovely here.

Now seriously...to answer your first question, If you have a HDTV with native 1080p resolution you will want a HDMI cable to be able to view your Blu-rays in that resolution. If you use s-video with your player (and I may be wrong here) you can't get a higher resolution than 480p. Personally I recommend component cables if you don't use HDMI so you can definately get at least 720p or 1080i resolution. As for sound, yes you can still hook your player directly to the tv for picture and use either optical or analog cables for your sound. If you receiver can decode uncompressed PCM use analog cables because optical doesn't have the bandwith to handle hi def audio. I hope i've helped some.

Oh yeah! When typing the response I completely forgot that he said he could connect HDMI to his TV! That's the second time today that I've made myself look like a blind idiot!!! Maybe it's just all of the new stuff I picked up to play with while out and about on Boxing day that's sitting all around me messing with my focusing abilities.

I seriously feel like a schizo right now. I don't know if I want to play PS3, watch a BD, watch some TV-on-DVD, play with my new PSP, make dinner... yeah, that's right... my entertainment is a necessity people! I don't have a problem!!!

You can use your Multichannel Analog Out for Uncompressed PCM.

Have an old school receiver and want Lossless audio??

Multichannel Analog will give you Uncompressed PCM (HD) audio...(Uncompressed PCM is identical to the studio master = Lossless.)

but if you think optical connection sounds better, by all means use it. Not everybody has same taste.

Do not to forget to update the firmware, if needed.

I got a question about Multichannel Analog & dvd audio. Would I get DTS/dolby digital (5.1) or would I still need my Toslink hooked up to get those off dvd's????
