Default 2008 Consumer Electronics Show (Blu-Ray / HD-DVD future)

Well, here is some food for thought:
The DVD has lasted what? a little over 10 years and still going.
But they will eventually be phased out whether we want to admit that or not.

At the 2008 CES they are going to introduce a 4K LCD television...that, as the number states...has almost 4 times the resolution of todays standard 1080p tv's. These LCD'a are less then an inch thick!!
They must be seen to be believed...I was almost salivating.

So, who wants to watch a 1080p Blu-ray on there 4K TV!?
Yes, I know the vast majority of us will not run out and buy these TV's in 2008. But within five years from now...they HAVE to introduce a format that matches the 4K tv's resolution when it comes to DVD movies.
So the DVD lasted a little over 10 years.
The Blu-Ray / HD-DVD lasts maybe five years?

Think about it...4K tv's will destroy everything you know about tv's.
Blu-Ray's will look completely dated if you try to view them on a 4K tv.
I mean you can't upconvert a 1080p disc to a 4k image.
I highly doubt it. This news is exciting yet depressing at the same time.

The thought of a 4k set is interesting, but as you've indicated, what source can be used for these?

The studios were slow to adopt and support even the current Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats. I'd be surprised if they are in any rush to sell something that might approximate the quality of their film masters.

Also, what is the perceived resolution difference difference by the human eye at a normal viewing distance?

I believe to many consumers have already dipped into the 1080p buying HDTV experience, no one if a few will be purchasing the new 4K TV's. Not to mention what is the price tag on these new TV's?

I have seen a 4K projector with Spiderman2 at CEDIA. The beauty of the Blu-Ray is amount of storage space of the Disc right...as technology improves and we can burn deeper...than more data (resolution) can be put on the disc. So that being said it is not out of the realm of possibility that you could see titles at that resolution as well, as 1.3 HDMI architecture could easily support the resolution bandwidth...as long as the cable you have in the wall can support the bandwidth demands. Or you will be tearing out walls to put new bandwitdh HDMI cable in...

Also resolution benefits are directly related to screen size and seating distance. If you had a 1080p 20" LCD and sat 8' feet away you would not see an appreciable differnce between 1080p, 720p or even 480p. Resolution to some extent is becoming like watts on a receiver...what does it REALLY mean.

My thoughts anyway

Who care about 10+ years down the road now. We still have to deal with HD-DEAD. Until we see HD DEAD gone from everywhere else than we can start talking something else

You know, when you think about it...
With these new 4K LCD tv's coming out (and beyond)
you have to imagine that ALL disc media "should" become obsolete.

Seriously, you would access movies the same way you access online content, firmware updates etc. Or maybe we will simply download movies to a hard drive. That way your resolution will ALL be dependant on the quality of your TV and it will have nothing to do with your DVD player, cables etc.
That would make the most sence because no TV would EVER be obsolete...you simply get the TV quality that you paid for.
Old TV = low quality resolution feed.
4k TV = the best resolution (for now).
That way no one has to spend money unless they wanted to.

Ummmm yeah, I forgot.
Big business wouldn't go for something that gives the consumer the power to buy something when he wanted to. They prefer to dictate the pace and push us around.
Sorry, Scratch that idea.
Yippee!! I can't wait for the Blu-ray 2 format for 4K TV's!!
That way I can buy my movie library over again for a third time!!!
And I'll get a sniny new Blu-ray 2 player to place on top of the other three players I have!! Yes!!
Ohh I'm so happy when rich companies get richer.
(insert sarcasm here)
