Default Anyone think HD DVD can come back??

Reading the latest Home Media Mag, it sounds as if Toshiba et al are going to do major marketing, etc, to try and recapture more of the market.

If Paramount and Universal continue to prolong the war for a couple months, which it seems they might....does anyone think we might fall back to more of a 50/50 share???

I really hope not, but these moron execs at Toshiba, Paramount and Universal dont seem to be getting the message that Blu Ray is the new format.

Thanks

After an 85/15 week, I don't think their marketing is working.
No. People are not dumb. Toshiba is using this as a way to make leverage to negotiate with Sony later. Plus they are advertising them more as upconverters and less as HD players. Everyone knows WB is Blu now, and that Blu has won. HD DVD can not come back from this anymore.
We just need to see the retailers start putting pressure on Paraversal to join Blu or risk not selling any HD content on their stores.

I don't think so. I think Toshiba and HD-DVD are doing what they can to "save face". Also, they are probably trying to get Sony to pay them off. (to go away).

I doubt that it's even possible for HD-DVD to come back to anywhere near 50% of the market. Last week, Blu-ray captured 85% of the high-def market. They have more players, more movies (and bigger hits), and better releases coming this year. HD-DVD is done; it's just a matter of time before Paramount and Universal cave in and go Blu.

They are just trying to get "rid" of the current players and will probably ride into the sunset probably March/April as supply will probably be completely sold/gone. I wish we can find out if they are still producing any units, that is really a true indicator if it is a true "fire" sale or not...

I don't think even Toshiba think they can come back. However they can try to put themselves in the strongest possible bargaining position to negotiate a more financially agreeable surrender to the BDA.

If it's still around, then yes...they have a chance. That's why BDA needs to end their life support NOW....continue to reduce price..more BOGO...more high profile releases...more partnership with other companies.

I'll think they can come back, if they're willing to give every blu-ray consumer 1000$.

Pressure is not needed. I don't think retailers will stock something that nobody is buying. Eventually they'll just stop ordering period.
It's obviously people are aware of who's winning in this format war more than Toshiba want to admit.
We'll see how long Paramount and Universal are willing to risk millions of dollars by putting out something that nobody want while Disney, Fox and the rest of the Bluray supporters laugh all the way to the bank.

I starting thinking today that Toshiba is like the knight in Quest for the Holy Grail ...when their arms get cut off they say "merely a flesh wound".

Sony has done an absolutely spectacular job at marketing Blu-Ray. You walk into a Best Buy it isn't hard to find an HDTV in front of a couch with a Blu-Ray player going on, at my store (which is a large Best Buy by the way), they have the HD-DVD player on a small LCD right in an aisle where people just walk by and ignore it.

Plus they just discounted all of their HD-DVD players, and I think everyone sees that as being desperate. Even at the lower prices, nobody is going to spend $100 or more on a player that will be obsolete within a couple years. HD-DVD is doing a better job at killing themselves with that discount than actually getting back into the game. If they were smart they should have worked harder to bring the prices of their movies down, (since originally they always said the main benefit to HD-DVD would be cheaper movies).

Unless they get cheaper movies, along with a marketing campaign that can rival Sony's, I wouldn't expect HD-DVD to gain any more support.
