Exclamation WOW! AVS closes its HDM Insiders Thread

I guess this is what happens when they can no longer win any pro HD DUD arguments... they take their ball and go crying home to mommy

My favorite quote: "It has outlived it's usefulness"

Real Life Translation = Nobody is buying HD DUD's crap/spin anymore... not even when the crap/spin is being slung by HD DUD insiders... so what's the point?

Greetings

I am saddened to tell you that the Insiders thread is going to remain closed as it has outlived its usefulness

We had a great run with the Insiders Threads: Volume I-IV, but all things must come to an end

Thanks to all the members and Insiders who participated here

Well, what more can I say...
I guess Penton and Talkstr8t can take nice long vacations now since they won't have to go back to the tarpits/muddy swamps that was the AVS HDM insider thread

They call it AV "Science" -- but I cant really fathom where the "science" part comes in. Enthusiasts I agree -- but science?

AVS as a whole should close -- it has outlived its usefulness

For anybody who wondered if that was really Amir's thread, I believe it was created mostly because of him originally and it went away just after he became retired/unemployed. Could have been largely moderator decisions or recommendations that led to that though.

That makes a lot of sense after you said that because it all fits together and also now we have mostly all of the blu insiders over here.

I guess closing the thread was AVS's version of this:

My favorite insider discussion ever was Darinp2 taking Amir to task over hd-dvd's bitrate and Amir's contention that only the currently playing audio/video/whatever counted against that bitrate. It was one of the first time's Amir ever got put in his place over there.

AVS is actually a great forum, but unfortunately the High Def Media area has been a breeding ground of stupidity. Luckily, the rest of the forum is the best of the best when it comes to audio and video. I have yet to find another place that has as much information about all different sorts of brands of projector's, speakers, subwoofers, etc. than at AVS.

They should have done this two years ago, I'll still wonder how much $$$$'s they were paid (by fill in the blank) to allow this, come-on avs sells high end stuff, how many RUNCO projectors (etc, etc) do you think they sold to the HD DUDers?

it was not in the insider thread, the thread was started after that. It was created exactly for that reason so that Amir can have a podium where he can spread his BS and no one can reply to it

even though I agree in part (the archives are filled with great info) the truth is that the quality had been going down for a few years now. The HD forums where just a highly exaggerated version of the rest. In my opinion the mistake was done when they decided they wanted a "popular" forum and then decided to add sections like HTIB and stuff. That was when it started becoming harder to discuss tech stuff or quality because you would have some bozo with "you don't need 1080p" and other stuff like that.

I also think they went a bit nuts with the listening to whiners. This was after I left but at some point there was a subsection for LCOS projectors because DLP fans did not like it that there where threads on LCOS. So anyone that is not a fanboy would need to read the high end projector forum for DLP and LCD and go to the LCOS for the rest to get an idea of what was out there.

Outside of HDM, AVS is a wealth of information, but it is also a wealth of a whole lotta space wasting nothingness.

Example, not long ago I wanted to find out some more information on my hdtv and it's features / capabilities. I go to the set's thread, it's 300 pages long. Dang near impossible to read through and find specific information. So I ask. The only responses I get are along the lines of "it's already been discussed in the thread, find the answer yourself." Can't search the thread either because you just find others asking the same question and getting the same "it's been discussed" responses. Either that or the searches just return people guessing at information, no one who can confirm anything, just a sea of a mess.

Sum it up in one word: worthless.

Maybe I'm just not familiar with the tricks to pull specific information out of AVS, I don't know. It feels like to use AVS you have to be on the forum 24/7 monitoring everything, otherwise it's too much to sort through and find the thing you're looking for.

As for the HDM insider's thread, shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that it's shut down. The userbase pissed off every insider that did not preach the gospel according to Amir. And now that Amir has nothing left to contribute, the thread is done with.

Ok, so the Insider's Thread gets closed, but at least this one has popped up.

Yeah, if that don't put the "science" in AVS, nothing else will.

Ain't that the truth.

There is a huge amount of information there, but it's too difficult to find.

I totally agree with you. The morons on that site have been increasing. I spend time in the SXRD (A3000) RPTV threads and some of the people entering the discussions are ruining things - even claiming that none of this is science. There's also a certain segment of Sony haters entering the threads.

The receiver and speaker areas still seem pretty good. Yeah there are the occassionally ignorant who think HDMI 1.3 is somehow magically better than 1.1 or 1.2 but we point them to the sticky threads.

The RPTV areas were long infected by Sony hating trolls. One troll had a good 40+ aliases attempting to troll the XBR1 thread and led to numerous purges.

One of the things I hate the most about AVS is how quick they are to delete threads, and we've lost many quite good threads. Locks I can understand. Someone persists in an propoagating locked issues should be banned. The revisionism almost seems Orwellian sometimes. The only time i think deletion should be used is in cases like the above (one persistent troll with numerous aliases with no even semi-legitimate intent and the only goal of asshattery).
