Default Anyone go from 42" 1080I to 46" 1080p?

I was all set to buy myself a samsung 46 inch lcd and two stores, one of which has their employees work on commission told me I would be wasting my money because I wont see a drastic difference in picture. My 42inch is a 4 year rear projection lcd and I figure even without blu-ray, a typical HD broadcast would look better. I am so dissapointed, because I certainly dont want to waste 2500 bucks if I wont see a difference. He, like many people, say the only true difference to the naked eye is on a 50" and up.

Do you all agree?

I bet that sales rep has skinny kids! (no money for food)

I am about to do the exact same thing and there is a great difference. It is a much much "crisper" picture. Trust me DO IT!

I wouldn't i have a 1080i and there is no discernable difference after i got my 1080p 55 inches. i watch blurays on both and don't notice a thing. everytime i watch blurays on my 1080p i feel like such an ass for wasting that money. 1080p is nonsense most won't admit it because they don't want to look stupid for wasting that kind of cash like me. 1080 is 1080 your not going to get more detail than you already have.

I dont agree at all. Its the difference between every other line resfreshed to EVERY line refreshed. I personally notice a difference. It is alot crisper image. IMO I guess.

By the way what brand TV do you have?

You have to take into account a few things.
If you don't have the best vision then you might not notice a difference. My mom wears glasses and she can't even tell the diff between 720 and 1080 unless it's a side by side comparison up close.
Also the location of where the sets gonna go. I have a 40" 1080p in my bedroom and it's great. I wouldn't recomend that size for a family room tho.

I have a sony and i want to get the sammy 120hz 46 incher but just dont know if I spend the 3000 am I going to regret it. The 42 inch now sits 2 feet off the ground in a niche. The new one is going to sit above the fireplace so it will be considerably higher. I wish BB or CC would let me return the TV if I didnt think there was a difference. hehe.

For that much $ why not just go a coupla hund more and get a 52 in XBR4? We got ours at CC for 3500 and I hear they're soon dropping to 3000.

I have a sony wega 3lcd. And the image is crisper but definetly no more detail than my 1080i. just smoother but i don't think worth the extra 900 dollars i payed for it. but to each his own.

There is a small amount of Sony fanboyism that runs through this forum.
They find it hard to belive that a Samsung lcd that is a couple hundred dollars less then a Sony, is better.
And will argue until green.

Well I owned a 60hz 46" Samsung and after reading all the hype on the Sony, I wanted to replace it with a 52" xbr4...Until I looked at the Samsung 71 series. Im so glad I didnt listen to the bias Sony fans and actually took time to compare them together in the store under the same conditions playing the same movie.(Circuit City & Spiderman 3 Blu-ray @ 24fps). On both the picture and fast motion look amazing, dont get me wrong. But black levels are important to me. and the Sony just couldnt hang with the Sammy.

And you are right, Both Sony and Samsung LCD panels are made jointly in the same plant.

For the ones who couldn't tell a difference,
you need to get your eyes checked.

I did the exact move, from a 42'' 1080i set to a 46'' 1080p and there is obvious improvement.

Of course there's a lot of things to consider,
but to say there is no absolute difference is just crazy.

Really? I heard that there was a long white line down the middle of the factory and that SONY is one side and Samsung the other- and that that is the only thing they share in common.

Nenmu is correct. Interesting thing is that alot of these people claiming no difference don't really understand the technology they've bought into. Those who claim to own a 1080i Digital Flat Panel think they are seeing a 1080 signal. The key is the native output resolution of the set. By their digital nature, a digital display cannot output 1080 interlaced, they only display progressive formats. 480p, 720p, and 1080p. Just because you input a 1080i signal, that doesn't mean you're seeing 1080i as the DFP electronics will take that signal and downconvert it to 720p. A 1080 signal is around 2 megapixel while 720 is around 1 megapixel. Their TV is taking the 1080i input, throwing out half of the pixels (resolution) and displaying 720 progressive.

So if they have an upconverting DVD player, it will take DVD 480i, deinterlace it (making it progressive) and the scale it up to 720. If they connect a 1080p source, it will take 1080p (and not all 720 displays can do this), downscale it to 720 (throwing out half the total pixel count) and display that.

They don't see the difference because there is none. If these folks would feed a 1080p source (input) to a native 1080p panel (output), they would have to be near blind to not see the difference.
