![]() U.S. Tokusatsu DVD/Blu-ray/4K Releases Guide Separated into categories based on popular franchises (spoiler tagged for your browsing convenience). Each category is separated by best current releases (top) and older or alternative releases (bottom). Titles with multiple editions that contain the same content may or may not be listed. Entries are only listed once per category (with exceptions). Bundles that contain films grouped with non-tokusatsu films are listed at the bottom of each category (with exceptions to more obvious titles) Please refer to individual database entries for additional information where available. All entries are included by judgement from the author. What's being counted as Tokusatsu? Tokusatsu refers to special effects in Japanese film and television. In western terms it generally refers to Japanese media that uses suitmation, miniatures, and models, with common themes being kaiju and henshin heroes. Genres are usually science fiction and fantasy but also can include horror and action. This list is grouped by "traditional tokusatsu" that closer matches the western definition, and "expanded tokusatsu" which includes all types of Japanese media that heavily uses SFX, particularly after the start of the digital age. To keep from straying too far- minor cosmetics, period costumes, and gore/blood sprays are not counted as tokusatsu. Special effects need to be a key part of the film or series. This list also includes international adaptions of tokusatsu as well as a bonus giant monster section. ________________ Godzilla & Toho Traditional Tokusatsu: [Show spoiler] Gamera & Daiei/Kadokawa Traditional Tokusatsu: [Show spoiler] Ultraman: [Show spoiler] Other Tsuburaya Tokusatsu: [Show spoiler] Super Sentai: [Show spoiler] Power Rangers: [Show spoiler] Kamen Rider: [Show spoiler] Metal Heroes & Related Saban Brands: [Show spoiler] Kikaider: [Show spoiler] Other Toei Traditional Tokusatsu: [Show spoiler] Senkosha Productions: [Show spoiler] Garo: [Show spoiler] Miscellaneous Traditional Tokusatsu: [Show spoiler] Miscellaneous Expanded Tokusatsu: [Show spoiler] Anime Inspired by Tokusatsu: [Show spoiler] Other Asian Giant Monsters: [Show spoiler] Other International Productions Inspired by Tokusatsu: [Show spoiler] Kong & Other International Giant Monsters: [Show spoiler] Discussion Threads Last updated 8/31/25.
