Question Blu-ray DVD player slow startup?

Hi new to forums...

I bought a Plasma TV, decided I would get a HDDVD Player, but then saw Toshiba is no longer investing in that tech, so I went back and bought a Sony Blue Ray player at Costco...

I noticed that both the Toshiba and Sony Blue Ray players take a long time to "warm up" They say "welcome" the loading, etc... my old school regular DVD player fired right and was ready to go.... I got to get to my "debby does dallas" Blue ray edition as soon as possible!!! (joking)

but it is a little annoying, I have to plan, turn on blue ray DVD, go make popcorn, come back put in blue ray planet earth...

btw, I used search function first, it just gave me a blank page...

thanks in advance,

chris

The Sony BDP-S300 or S301? Yeah, quite slow compared to more recent releases. If you want the fastest, get a PS3. If you want a standalone, get the Panasonic BD30 (or wait till next month for the BD50).

I own a Sony BDP-S1 and it is probably slower than the S300. I also own two Pioneers; one of which is a bit better but still slow by DVD load standards.

Make sure you upgrade firmware as soon as possible. You can download the .iso from Sony and burn it to a CD with ease. I think 3.70 is the latest on the S300/301.

Edit: When you use the search function, make sure you change the filter to search forums. I think it still defaults to movies. There is a players section on the forums and might be a sticky for your player. Rest assured, load times are sluggish for most standalone players.

Slow start-up times for the Sony BDP-S300 (and similar models) are indeed slow. Slower still is the time it takes to load Java-heavy Blu-ray discs. It is something that I have gotten used to.

My neighbor has a Sony Playstation 3. It loads Blu-ray discs as fast as your old DVD player loads standard DVDs. It has a computer processor (so he said). Apparently, the stand-alone BD players do not have the computing power of the PS3.

Still, it is worth the wait to see a movie in full 1080p high-definition with powerful surround sound. Watching standard TV (and many standard DVDs, even when upconverted) is a dismal experience.

You made a wise decision to not purchase the Toshiba HD-DVD player. It is clearly a dead format. Enjoy your new experience with Blu-ray.

What I do when I walk into my home in the evening is simply turn on the Blu-ray Player, and once I put in a disc, it does not take as long as a cold start-up. Try that !!! [Jim]

the PS3 seems to be, by far the fastest loading Blu-ray player in the market..

I've seen the 1st and 2nd gen Sony, 1st and 2nd generation Samsung, the latest Sharp, Panasonic and PS3....

PS3 kills them...

As a Pioneer owner, this is what I practice.

Seriously, if load time is the highest priority then there is no other way right now but to go with the PS3. Some other bothered with slow load times and some aren't (like me).

This is what I bought...

The Sony BDP-S301, so far so good, I was more curious as to why this new technology was slower at loading, at first I thought I had a defective machine... Looks like that is standard for my model...

same here..... i usually thow in a dvd and end up pausing it 3 or 4 times while i get all my stuff together, pop, munchies, cigarettes, ashtray, phone of the hook.....etc..... so now by the time i finish prepping its good to go. and yeah it takes longer but we are not talking 10 minutes... im patient enough the 2 minutes or so does not bother me.

I am pretty much a tech dummy, so I am not sure what this means or how to do this... if you have a moment, maybe you can explain further...

thanks, chris

your gonna wanna go to sony website if your player is a sony, then look up the model number of your blu, there will be a red highlighted link that says firmware update, read the instructions, download it, burn it to a disc, then throw it in your player.

if you don't have burn capability, then there is a number or email or something you contact and sony will ship you the most recent firmware on a disc.

It does! I have the Sony S300 (same model) and while it does load slowly, the new firmware helped out quite a bit, particularly with BD-J titles.

To the OP -- realize that these players are still new technology. The discs can hold anywhere from 4 to 7 times a standard DVD, so loading all that extra data takes time. Plus, the drives in most players are probably only a 2x read speed, whereas DVD has been around a while and it's common to see 8x or 12x speeds, referring to the amount of data transferred per second. It can only get faster as the tech evolves, but be proud of your player--it's awesome!

That said, I also have a PS3 and it loads TONS faster than any of the stand-alone players. Plus... VIDEO GAMES!
