Default HD-DVD and Blu-ray owner

I have a few questions, and please lets not try to make this a bash session.

I do own both formats, and I do know that HD-DVD is going to be like yesterdays Beta Max players or Divx players. I would like to know if there are going to be any plans to for trade ins once everyone gets on board with Blu Ray??

I bought both formats for only 1 reason, I like watching movies, and I could not watch some of my favorite movies on just 1 format, cause Transformers, Heroes, Battlestar Gallactica and a few others was on HD, where Cars, Spider-man, Die Hard and others was on a different format. I really did not care who was going to win lose draw in the format wars, cause I was getting the HD out of both instead of the old DVD's that looked crappy on my Plasma TV.

I want to know if future blu-ray players are going to allow me to watch my HD-DVD movies I own now or are there going to be a trade in thing when a certain movie comes out on Blu-Ray why would I want to buy it again. In that retrospec, I would not mind paying a few extra to get it on Blu-Ray if I could return my HD-DVD for a small trade in fee. What I do not want to see happen, look my HD-DVD player no longer works and now I cannot watch all the movies I have on HD-DVD, I would be in a pickle.

Yes the format war is over, and I seen post where people say screw the HD-DVD people, but unlike some, I supported both, not just 1, I have 1 Blu-Ray for each 1 HD-DVD movie I own. I spent my money to buy the movies I liked, and did not care which format they was on, as long as I enjoyed them. So I do not think the HD-DVD people should be left holding the shaft being it was the Format War that punished us all in the 1st place, hard to choose sides when I liked movies from both sides.

So what are the plans going to be for those who have HD-DVD movies?? Does anyone know??

Short answer is you keep your HD DVD player with no chance of seeing a newer player from Toshiba - ever. Period. A few new HD DVD movies should come out and they should play on your unit. If not, there would have to be a firmware in the works.

I hear LG might make a combo player which plays both HDM formats. Your best bet is probably to just get a BD player if you have the space for both. Combo players won't be marketed items forever, and that is a LOT of extra money to pay.

Welcome to blu-ray.com.

I doubt it . . . the format war, and others before it, was a buyer beware situation.

The best you're going to get is a dual format player. The Blu-ray manufacturers have no interest in investing in a format whose users are no longer in a state of growth. Just the opposite, many HD DVD owners have written the format off and made what money back that they can. Again, as far as the trade in, I think you're out of luck. Buyer beware.

Unfortunately that's the cost of format wars. People lose out in many ways.

LG is planning to release a dual format player specifically for this reason. There are also some companies that have (in at least some countries) started to run an "exchange" program, where you get the BD for a HUGE discount if you give them the HD DVD. I do not know where, or what titles, but I have not found one near me.
It is likely that they will do nothing since they want your money. Just hold onto your HD DVD player for now or get the dual format player. Eventually the prices on the BD movies will drop. When that happens, you can buy the BD version of your HD DVD movies and sell/give away/store/throw out your HD DVDs. Why? Cause they will not be supported so if anything goes wrong with the movie or the player, you are stuck.
So I suggest you hold onto it for now, but you will want the BD version eventually.

Other than existing combo players, I strongly doubt that there will be future interest from CEs to come out with new players that will play both BD and HD-DVD. I also doubt that you'll find trade-in programs when BD titles come out to replaced HD-DVD titles. Your best bet may be eBay.

I don't want to be mean or anything but a part of me can't help but wonder why the heck you're even asking this question...

The obvious answer is no. And as an early adopter surely you must have know that the 2 formats were incompatible. Not to mention Amazon and numerious retailers have these huge flags saying as much...

But w/e. The short answer is NO.

If I were you I'd sell them off cheap on eBay to die hard HD DVD supporters or try an HD DVD forum to see how much you can get for them. Then save that money up for Bluray stuff...

Thats just me though...

I would just keep your player, and possibly buy another since the price of an HD-dvd player is very low now or even buy someone's used for cheap. I too am just a movie lover, Still own a vcr, Have a Laserdisc player connected to my plasma and some other old gadgets but alot of new, blu-ray and hd-dvd. I've picked up some great deals since the end of the war, alot of these movies that are on HD-dvd will not be out on blu-ray for a long long time, people keep asking when there going to be out for blu-ray but as we know it was a while for dvd to phase out the vcr. Some movies are not even on dvd yet... Dang that Howard the Duck!

Like others have said, when you pick the losing format, you lose.

Well if you had waited, you wouldn't be in this situation. Impatience on the part of dual format supporters is what made this format war last longer. So I am sorry but the format war didn't make you suffer. Those of us who supported only Blu-ray suffered. Now, unfortunately it's your turn. You are in the same "pickle" people who bought Divx and Betamax were in. They didn't get bailed out. There is too much of an attitude in this country that if people make bad decisions, then the government or someone else should bail them out. That's not the real world. What about all the money lost by the Blu-ray companies because of the format war? Shouldn't the hd-dvd folks have to pay restitution?

You will still be able to watch your hd-dvd movies as long as Toshiba supports your player. Then you will have to buy those movies on Blu.

There are a lot of HD DVD guys recommending that consumers who don't know any better pick up a cheap toshiba and HD DVDs at a discount. Obviously, this is horrible advice, but it creates a climate in which those of you who have the foresight to dump your HD DVD gear and titles can do so and get some cash to put toward BD versions of those titles (they're coming). So as someone said above, I recommend you put up for auction on ebay your HD DVDs and your toshiba while you can still get decent cash for them.

I know that's probably not what you wanted to hear, but it's the best advice you're gonna get.

There have been a couple reports of retailers offering rebates on Blu-ray hardware on trade-in, but not in North America. I wouldn't hold your breath.

In short, as an early adopter you took a chance. You covered your bases by going both ways and got all the benefits of having all the movies available to you in the beginning. For the downside...

As far as your HD DVD software goes, don't expect sympathy from manufacturers or retailers; there won't be rebates on trade-in. As far as they are concerned, the software works fine (the same argument that hardware manufacturers are making), so why would they owe you anything?

You, like a million other HD DVD owners, are unfortunately the ones who lose out as a result of this corporate struggle. Best thing you can do is make use of your investment, or liquidate it asap so that you can rebuy those titles when they are released on Blu-ray.

As far as a player goes, I am keeping mine, and will continue to purchse HD DVDs until there are none left. I only got it because I owned an xbox 360, and I wanted Hi-def movies. The player will still get used for an upconvert player for sd dvd. I am new to blu-ray, and I love it, and will buy them as well. (Just my 2 pennies.)

that's certainly your choice to make. however, keep in mind that unless you stock up on HD DVD players now also, those HD DVDs you're buying will only ever play on one player - your 360 add-on.

in other words, i hope you're getting your HD DVDs for a bargain.

and, i feel no particular sympathy for you if you complain that you lost out on this format war, seeing as how you're choosing to continue to sink money into HD DVD.

No complaints from me. I already got an extra hd dvd add-on put away just in case. ($50)If it happens, it happens. I gave away hundreds of VHS tapes and a couple of VCRs when dvd came out, and I have no regrets. Some studios are not going to release certain movies for a good while. I love Transformers, and I want it on Blu-ray, but for now hd dvd will get play at my house.
I based my choice on what I had at the time. It was cheaper than paying $500 for a new PS3 or stand alone BD player. I got a PS3 now, and I will enjoy both until I can get no more hd dvds. I watched Beowulf (hd dvd) Saturday, and I paid $30 for it with no regrets whatsoever.

To the OP:

Keep your HD-DVD player. Keep your discs. Watch them to your hearts delight. Purchase all future titles on Blu.

All is well in the world.

Plans for those who picked up Hd players?
None.
Choices made, consequences taken.
EVERYONE knew going in that there would be one winner and placed their bets accordingly.
When the rumors came of a Warner switch, that was the best sign to sell yet like others you chose not to and lets admit it the reason was because you were not sure.
"But what if hd wins????"
When it really happened, there was another chance to unload the hd stuff but again the choice was made not to.
When Walmart switched, when Netflix switched, when Best Buy announced their choice still nothing was done on your part.
So sorry...
