Except via satellite? Though they tested a freeview OTA HD system (but this wasn't really available to view for the general public), and if and when they have a freeview OTA HD+SD system (say after analogue switchoff), chances are they will have sold off so much of the frequencies that there won't be hardly any frequencies/bandwidth left for HDTV or lowres TV.

I thought you were saying we have never had HD broadcasts. If that's not what you meant by the above statement then I'm sorry, I misunderstood.

PS: I still think we should have a good OTA HD & SD digital system (and none of our frequencies should be sold off).

no we didnt have any form of HD broadcast till 2004 and even that was a very small service and stll doesnt have to many channels.

As per previous posts... we do have Sky HD (and have had it for around 2 years). The advantage over Freeview HD (not yet available... and not for a long time yet) is that there is nationwide coverage. Also the satellite based system can stream more channels than a Freeview HD service ever could.

The service is still not exactly comprehensive, but more channels are being added all the time. There is now C4 HD and we are shortly to get Eurosports HD just in time for the French Open (Tennis). Discovery and Nat. Geo HD. can be a bit repetitive at times.

Sky Sports is good. I was watching the golf the other weekend and the picture was absolutely lovely. It was nice to see some sunshine . The movies are good too... we have just got another movie channel (I remembered)... Sky Movies Premier HD. There are some interesting things on the documentary channels... I'm waiting for the new series of American Chopper .

There's a plan afoot to allow UK residents with the appropriate equipment,(whatever the hell that is), to be able to receive free HD channels in time for the Olympics in 2012. I believe also that the UK government would initially not allow the BBC and ITV to broadcast free HD channels, probably becasue they're greedy assh*les who also intend to sell off the analogue signals, when digital tv has finally taken over the UK also in 2012.

Can anyone tell me the frequencies for Channel 4 HD? I live in Ireland and using the website lyngsat.com i wasnt able to tune it in - think it could be a setting for the UK only? I was able to tune in BBC HD and hope to be able to get Eurosport HD when it launches!

Hmm... well at least with Sky I can get Sky Sports 1, 2, and 3. Discovery HD, National Geographic HD, Sky Arts HD, Luxe HD and History HD. I tuned in BBC HD but not a great amount of content on it.. Pity i cant seem to get Channel 4 HD tho.

Not necesarily. Some people can get Freeview but not Satellite HDTV due to objects in the line of site between them and the satellite. There may also be issues with people not being allowed to put a dish on their house (planning laws or whatever).

A Freeview HD & SD service would be able to have more channels than they would otherwise have (or better quality/higher resolution ones) if those people didn't sell off our frequencies.

Yes, I was aware of these limitations, but neglected them as they can also apply to terrestrial transmissions too.

PS... For those of a green fingered bent, "Gardeners World" is now in HD on BBC HD. It looked very good indeed.

PPS... The new series of American Chopper has just started on Discovery HD. They are as mad as ever!!!

This is very common in my area, I am unable to have satellite due to not being permitted to have a dish on the property. Freeview is fine because the aerial is internal and not visible from the outside, an external aerial would not be permitted either.

Not on Virgin sadly, still only the BBC in HD. Though there is on demand stuff in HD which is free, think I can get earlier seasons of Lost in HD this way.
