Default Recommend some surround speakers.

I have Klipsch RF-35's for fronts and a klipsch RC-62 center channel speaker. I have yet to upgrade my receiver, but it's useless since it only has "simulated" surround sound, no 5.1, and no hdmi. Anyways, i need 4 speakers to round out the 7.1 setup (once i have a sub). I want them to be really good and really small, since i'm probably gonna mount them at the top of my wall right before it meets the ceiling and just angle them down towards the listening area. On a semi-related note, should the side surrounds be at a direct 180 degree angle from the listening position? Should the back surrounds be directly behind the main listening position? I'd like to keep under $1000.

I just bought some RB-35's from Tweeter earlier this month. They are a bit large for surrounds as they are bookshelfs) but 2 for $300, it's worth it.

Closest to you would be
Tweeter
27702 I-45 North
Woodlands/Oak Ridge , TX 77385

Sale

fyi, all klipsch speakers are 20% off through next week (may 26)

thanks for the input. that is a pretty good deal. Not sure i have the room to go 7.1 so i might actually get some bigger speakers for my rears and put them on stands. Question: If i'm watching a 7.1 soundtrack, but only have a 5.1 setup, where does the rear surround information go? Is it lost or will the receiver send both the rear and side surround info to the back speakers? i'm assuming on 5.1 setup that you're supposed to connect your surrounds to the rear surround plugs in the back of the receiver and not the side surrounds? Sorry so many questions.

There are 2 streams of thought on this.
1) you don't loose much because its only accenting
2) if your receiver is setup for 5.1 it will down mix into 5.1. I think it varies based on receiver though.. What's your BD player? It may have a setting directing the audio dispersion.

For a 5.1 setup, you'd leave your 'rear surrounds' unplugged. In some receiver models these are used for bi-amping for fronts (5.1 setup), or accenting (7.1 setup). The 'surrounds' or 'side surrounds' should be connected for proper 5.1 setup.

I've been waiting all day for you to recommend me some B&W's. Seriously, I have. Can you recommend some specific models/brands of dipoles.

you can still go 7.1, but for the "rear" surrounds, I wouldn't spend more than $300 or so for the pair.... now for the other surrounds, check out the Paradigm Reference ADP-450 See what price you can get on them... you might be able to squeeze in the rears too within your budget.

Definitive Technology BPX are also GREAT..... I'd recommend them in a heartbeat.

Just get speakers that as closely match the front/center channels as possible.

The most important thing here is to not have the rear or side surrounds stand out, you want them to blend in. The easiest way to accomplish this is by getting the same brand - and if possible - the same model/line as your fronts.

So all of these speakers above are dipoles? Is it recommended to put your rear surrounds in the corners of the room, or more to the point, does anyone make good rears that "fit" into corners.

I guess that makes sense, but everyone else seems to think only the fronts and center need to match.

it's mostly ambient sounds, bullets, explosions, etc.... trust me... unless you use tiny satellites for fronts, and Apogee Grands for surrounds.... (exaggeration) you're gonna be hard pressed to say "oh.. my surrounds just don't match my fronts" I thought Klipsch made dipoles that were corner fitted.... anyone know of the models of these??? They probably aren't common if they ARE made, because a corner usually isn't the best accoustical placement for most people's rooms, so that type of speaker would cut down on the people who would be able to incorporate it into their rooms.

EDIT... the ones I recommended were dipoles..... you can use dipoles, and if you feel the need to upgrade to 7.1 you can still do so.... but I find 5.1 sufficient (but I have 7.1 go figure)
