I just saw the TH42PX80U today when I was doing a shop at Best Buy. I work for the other guy. We should be getting the 42 and 50 in really soon. There is definitely a noticeable difference from the TH42PX75U. The 800U or 85 series won't be coming out until late March or April from what our Panasonic rep told us.

Did anyone read the article that said Pioneer is using Panasonic's plasmas for their 42 inch size? IMHO Pioneer is way overpriced with no difference in picture compared to the Panasonic. I even prefer the Panasonic's picture. I have seen multiple Pioneers set up in various stores right next to Panasonic's equally comparable model, and you can't see a difference. Definitely not worth paying the extra thousand or so for. Now that Pioneer is having Panasonic building their plasmas it just goes to show that even they know who is the king of plasmas. Panasonic also backs it up with #1 ratings from consumer reports and cnet.

I think the main reason why Pioneer dropped the production of 42 inch models is to focus on the demand of their target customers and the dropping the size that is the least profitable for them. I read somewhere that the demand was even higher for 60 inch Kuro than 50 inch.

It's all a matter of offer and demand. People who can afford to pay 4000-6000$ on a display are not gonna go for a 42 inch model. People who have 2500$ to spend on a display will rather get a 50 inch Panasonic rather that a 42 inch Pioneer

This isn't to say say that Panasonic displays aren't good... They are probably the best quality/value choice!

But Pioneer so far are the best Plasma displays! Maybe that will change and Pioneer will have to readjust their prices.

Sorry, but the current Pioneer line is the best reviewed in recent history. Many reviewers have gone on record saying the the Kuro line are the best flat panel tv's ever. There is a huge difference in quality. The black level produced by the new Pio's are what creates this reality, so good are their pictures that the reviewers have gone on record as stating that Pioneer's 720P tv's have superior quality than all the competitions 1080P tv's.

That all comes down to what source is going to the TV. Your only as strong as your weakest link.

Wow. Panasonic has gotten pretty good, but I dont think they can touch a Pioneer. I think pio is worth it all the way.
On topic, I am excited to see the new Panasonic's, especially if I could demo it hooked up to a BD30/50

I am definately interested in getting the TH-50PZ85. The price looks fantastic. The current panasonics don't do native 24p, which is a shame because there are good prices now on the TH58PZ700. Also the PZ85 and the PZ800 series will both have a contrast ratio of 30,000:1 over the current 5,000:1 or 10,000:1? Looking forward to seeing it, and will be a great compliment to a DMP-BD30K

Yup... Pioneer was best rated for their OLD product, the Kuro line. The extreme contrast models will not be out for another year or TWO. In the meantime... Panansonic steams ahead with better panels... hurry up Pioneer. I'd love to see the new panels from panny :-) They ought to blow away the older pioneers. (Kuro is old now... altho still good)

Agreed - when the Panny sets came out last year the TH-50PZ750U was being reviewed by Gary Merson as being better than the Elite 50" 1080p PRO-FHD1 in several areas.

http://hdguru.com/?p=100

Quote:
The TH-50PZ750 placed side by side with the Pioneer PRO-FHD1 made for an interesting comparison. How did the Panasonic’s image look? In a word: WOW. The overall picture quality excelled in reproducing dark and bright level details with a high contrast ratio.

The TH-50PZ750’s color accuracy was the best I have seen on a plasma display and it was the only panel evaluated that produces a true red. Comparing the Pioneer when viewing The Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift on HD DVD clearly showed the difference between Panasonic red and Pioneer red. The same car is red on the TH-50PZ750 and orange on the Pioneer. Ditto for the neon signs and lights of the Ginza in Tokyo at night, where red lights appear crimson versus Pioneer’s orange-y reds. Speaking of night scenes, the Panasonic’s deeper blacks revealed details that the Pioneer (and other plasmas) obscured, as if a veil had been lifted off the Pioneer’s panel.

Jay Leno’s blue sport jacket’s pinstripes provided a fine example of the Panasonic’s superior image. Both panels reproduced the pinstripes; but they were more distinct on the TH-50PZ750. The effect is not subtle; five friends performed the side-by-side tests with a variety of source material. They all picked the Panasonic as the best panel.

In conclusion, the Panasonic TH-50PZ750 is simply the best high definition display I have ever reviewed. With a retail of $3999 and an expected street price that will be even lower, I would also consider it a bargain.
It's back and forth with Panasonic and Pioneer. I believe the new -800 and -850 series will be better than the current 1080p Kuro's, but then Pioneer will bring out their 9th generation. Panasonic is currently on their 11th generation.

Panasonic always have the highest rated plasmas for reliability as well in all sizes, by Consumer Reports. They also had 38% of the market last year (I believe)

You can't go wrong with either. Good to see Panny are bringing out some 24p capable models this year also, the -800 and -850 series.

Don't get me wrong, I love it when companies like Pioneer and Panasonic compete for better products, good for us consumers. But until anyone credible has actually compared the 8G Pioneer with the 11G Panasonic, the statements above are pure speculation. Anyways, I want to see a Kuro Elite vs. 800/850 series comparo. If the 800/850 are anywhere close to the Kuro Elite I might get one for my bedroom.

It's pure speculation based on history, nothing more.
