Default what is the difference between HD and Blu-ray?

Hi.
This is still all very new to me. Is there a difference between HD and Blu-ray? Which is better?

Bluray is High Definition. The best available.

...there use to be HD-DVD which was a competing format but has since become obsolete.

it can be played at 720p, 1080i or 1080p.

(1080p via HDMI only)

...what kind of setup do you have?

As already said, Blu-ray is high definition, and is the best form of high definition available.

HD DVD & BR.. No difference in video quality if both use VC-1. For audio, I'd say BR has the advantage.. Plus 50 gigs.. HD DVD was the 'complete' format for extras..But since profile 2.0 is out, more & more players will have them, or via a firmware if your player has a Ethernet connection. So BR is a complete format. Early on Many thought HD DVD was superior, but it was due to BR launch titles releasing in Mpeg-2.. & Samsungs Initial player didn't help matters when they had the DNR set on high, without anyway to change it. But since HD DVD flopped, it's BR or broke..

Default HD vs. Blu-ray

All Blu-ray discs are 1080P, and you'll never see that broadcast over the air or via cable/satellite. There's just not enough bandwidth to support it. So, all Blu-ray discs have the potential to look better than the same movie, etc. that you'll get from any other source.

Another difference (I don't think anyone has mentioned) is the audio. Most Blu-ray discs contain hi-res lossless audio (DTS-HDMA, Dolby TruHD, Uncompressed PCM). The best you'll get from cable/satellite is Dolby 5.1 (a lossy compression format you get on DVDs). Also, many programs and movies are still presented in stereo even though the video is broadcast in HD.

Hope this helps.

I'm wondering if you were asking about HD (as in HDTV, etc.) or about HD-DVD? Either way, it looks like the question has been answered for both.
