In this modern fairytale by Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs trilogy, Confession of Pain), Andy Lau is Sam, the chairman of a construction empire whose development projects in Macau have vaporized an old district and made him an unpopular figure among the locals. One of them is a croupier and cabaret dancer called Milan (Shu Qi), who has long blamed Sam for crushing the places that her childhood memories hinge on. The two, as in any rom-com, meet by chance and fall head over heel in love with each other. The twist here, curiously, is that Milan doesn’t know that her lover is none other than chairman Sam. Shouldn’t a hated public figure be at least recognisable by the people who loathe him?

With a touch of spontaneity emanating from its cast of endearing characters, the film is for the most part a charming departure from the straightforward Cinderella formula. Already having to put up with Sam’s long marriage history (he’s been divorced three times) and the exploitative press, Milan also has to come to terms with the realisation that her sweetheart is, indeed, “filthy rich”. With Sam’s closest allies (Denise Ho and Dominic Lam) also entangled in similar struggles down the social ladder, Lau’s film appeals with its firm grips on reality and class consciousness – before it swaps exactly that for the fabricated melodrama of a love-matching TV show. Look for a Star turns out to be an escapist fantasy through and through: emphatic proclamations of love, we are asked to believe, do trump all.
