Default Onkyo 605 sound question

Hi all,
I have a question. I have the Onkyo 605 receiver and a Polk 7.1 speaker setup. Have it hooked up with the PS3 through HDMI. 7.1 works great. I have everything set correctly with the PS3. Here is my question.
In the receiver book there are listening modes such as 5.1 channel source + neo 6, this mode uses Neo:6 to expand 5.1 channel sources for 6.1/7.1 playback. The receiver always read multichannel because of the setup for the PS3 through HDMI so if I hit listening mode to use the Neo6 so I can do the above, it doesn't allow me to change the listening mode. Is this because of the way I have everything setup with the PS3 doing the decoding?
Also is there a way around this?
Hope I was clear. Thanks in advance.
There's also another listening mode called 5.1-channel source + Dolby EX, this one is to expand 5.1 channel sources to 6.1/7.1 channel playback. This one is especially suited to Dolby EX soundtracks that include a matrix-encoded surround back channel.

It can't do that with multichannel PCM. It can only do that when bitstreaming. Since you have a PS3 this means DD and DTS only. If you had a player that bitstreamed the new codecs, you could do it.

Alternatively, you'd have to step up to ... the Onkyo 706 or 806. This is why (among other reasons) I haven't gone 7.1 even though I have the speakers to do so.

So I would either have to go back to the optical cable(then I wouldn't be able to do DTS-HDMA) or get a standalone Bluray player and let the receiver do the encoding right? I guess I'll not worry about it right now. What I have sounds great as is.

you can matrix pcm audio. the ps3 sometimes automatically sends a 7.1 signal that isnt really 7.1. to get around it, deselect some of the higher pcm selection. i have done this with blu ray movies and games

You mean some of the audio settings in the PS3 menu. Give me an example so I can play around with it tomorrow. You're sure I can do this with the 605?
Thanks.

I don't think so. The 705 has THXUltra 2, or some such, which will matrix the 5.1 pcm to 7.1. The 605 does not include this feature.

You would still get 5.1 lossless audio over hdmi, which is superior to the matrixed lossy you would get over bitstreamed optical.

No you'd still use HDMI, but you'd select "bitstream" for it to get the lossy core DD 5.1 or DTS 5.1, which could then be matrixed out to 7.1. I think your best choice is to stick with what you have.

I'm afraid I don't understand what you're saying. "Deselect some of the higher pcm selection" - are you talking about de-selecting the 5.1 settings so it'll push out only 7.1? I don't think this will work.

as posted before, your receiver may not be able to but it is possible to matrix pcm audio. for example, ut3 is only 5.1. if i deselect 7.1 pcm on the audio set up for the ps3, i can matrix the 5.1 to 7. the receiver still displays 5.1 pcm but i get audio out of all 7 speakers.

The 605 does do this. I got it out of my manual. I'm just trying to figure out how to get it to work. It has a bunch of listening modes.

Yes, it has a bunch of listening modes, but that is not one of them. It was one of the things sacrificed for the lower cost of the 605.

It may matrix from the optical input, but then you wouldn't be getting the hd audio which IMO defeats the purpose.

Dude, that's because it's bitstreaming game audio. Either that or you don't have a 605. *EDIT* YOU HAVE THE 705, YA WANK!

KPKelley has it right. I have the receiver and it doesn't have THX.

i was referring to the post that said you cant matrix pcm audio. it has been since edited and added to. posts dont say edited when text is added all the time. the second paragraph talking about specific receiver models was added, dude.

edit: if it was bitstreaming it would not say multich pcm

You will have to sell your 605 and get 705 they are pretty affordable now that the 06 models are out.

You CAN matrix it, but not with the 605.

I may be thinking of my 360, but I thought the last time I played a game it switched from multich pcm to DD 5.1 on the receiver, which would imply it's bitstreaming it.

I'm not going to worry about it then. I don't want to sell my 605 and upgrade since I haven't even had the receiver for 6 months now. I'll just enjoy 7.1 on Blus that have it and everything else in 5.1
Thanks to everyone for their input. I appreciate it.
