Question about scratched BD

So I got a BD rental in the mail and when I put in my player it makes pretty bad shuffle sound as it spins. I found out someone probably used a knife to put multiple scores across the back, that has to be deliberate..

I just want to know if that might have damaged my player? I only put tried a couple times a few seconds each. Probably the scratches made not able to spin balanced?
I tried one of my disc for a few seconds and it seems ok. but I am pretty upset people would do that.
