Let's have it out, On most hdtv threads you can almost guarantee there is a plasma vs lcd convo being held. This topic is all about personal preference, so no need to bash another users opinion. Please only use first hand experiences or reliable information when making a post. That being said, my vote goes to LCD
Although plasma's have better black levels, I prefer the brightness of an lcd. Just to make this known, imo, plasma as a technology are not the best hdtv's on the market. The Pioneer Kuro is |

Although I have a Rear Projection LCD that I bought almost 3 years ago now. I plan on getting a Plasma for my next TV within the next year or so funds permitting.

curious about the viewing angle comments, most lcd's are 178 degrees. What viewing angle is standard for plasma's?
For me to notice a difference in pq based on angle with my lcd's, i'd have laying on the floor at an extreme angle to notice a change. |

LCD of course. Looks very good and games too.
And Blacks are very deep in more recent models. Until OLED shows up. |

I love my LCD, the only thing I wish for is deeper blacks. I have NEVER experienced motion blur. The PQ is fantastic!!! Look at the screens in my gallery.
![]() I think both are great technologies. Plasma, for the money, cannot be beat right now though. I would audition both and see what suits you best. ![]() |

well. to answer the polls question, plasmas do have slightly better picture quality. But you have to weigh in plasma's cons. So if the question were Which technology is superior overall? LCD

I had to go with LCD since the low-level noise in plasma bugs me. Anyway, so many HDTV manufacturers are dropping plasma, the point could be moot in a year or so.

A couple of the main plasma manufacturers decided to outsource production of the panels themselves to outside companies. To give you an example, Pioneer will be receiving it's panels from Panasonic and possibly Hitachi. No one is "dropping" plasma anytime soon. |

Everyone says how good plasmas are, but all they talk about is the picture. However, what about the TV itself? The reliability of the set, its ability to function, its stability, and its ability to perform reliably without hassle are all important aspects to a good set. Why do you think computers don't use plasma screens? Because with common activity, the screens wouldn't last as long.
For example, OLED may look fantastic, but if the set only lasts a year in comparison to an LCD which may last 10+ years then the OLED is just a bucket of bolts that looks waxed. Also, if we're using the Kuro as a plasma comparison then let's use the most advance and recent LCD models as a comparison module as well. I heard the new Samsungs had blacks and colors to match plasmas. From experience, I know my set hasn't had any viewing angle issues and the colors/blacks are almost pitch. Blacks are so close to matching the blacks of the TV frame. Let's just give fair non-one way comparisons here. As for my opinion, I believe both technologies are the same. Right now, plasma is slightly ahead of the game but the LCD technology is still improving as well. In that case, the rest depends on the qualiy of the set. I think everyone can guess where my vote goes. I want to leave my LCD on for two days straight, or even a week, without having my set have a nervous breakdown. ![]() In the future when I have kids, I also want to let them do what they wish on the TV and walk up and go play without me freaking out about whether or not the set is going to get left on. When I move my TV, I don't want to worry about tilting it or turning it sideways to move it. I just want to move it. If somebody can debate this and can prove the reliability of a plasma without buttering up the facts AND say the picture is worth it, I will be happy to purchase a plasma as my next TV. I'm just not convinced otherwise. Last edited by blushiz; 11-15-2008 at 04:31 AM. |
