I have 2 LCDs, and a DLP-FP and I say "Plasma"

Never had one.... but they're better in my opinion. (and my Sharp Aquos is a piece of garbage)

I love my LCD, the only thing I wish for is deeper blacks. I have NEVER experienced motion blur. The PQ is fantastic!!! Look at the screens in my gallery.

I think both are great technologies. Plasma, for the money, cannot be beat right now though. I would audition both and see what suits you best.

well. to answer the polls question, plasmas do have slightly better picture quality. But you have to weigh in plasma's cons. So if the question were Which technology is superior overall? LCD

I had to go with LCD since the low-level noise in plasma bugs me. Anyway, so many HDTV manufacturers are dropping plasma, the point could be moot in a year or so.

Oh good lord another doomsayer.

A couple of the main plasma manufacturers decided to outsource production of the panels themselves to outside companies.

To give you an example, Pioneer will be receiving it's panels from Panasonic and possibly Hitachi.

No one is "dropping" plasma anytime soon.

I wouldn't call myself a doomsayer. I visit HDTV manufacturers 3-4 times per year to discuss our future product plans and hear their requirements, and was just repeating what I was told by many, but not all, of them.

Sony got out of the plasma tv making business :X

and didn't Sony have something to do with bluray discs? lol

Also on the cnet review, When comparing black levels with the xbr8 and the kuro, xbr8 produced darker blacks

Although kuro still slightly won, it's not because of black levels.

Everyone says how good plasmas are, but all they talk about is the picture. However, what about the TV itself? The reliability of the set, its ability to function, its stability, and its ability to perform reliably without hassle are all important aspects to a good set. Why do you think computers don't use plasma screens? Because with common activity, the screens wouldn't last as long.

For example, OLED may look fantastic, but if the set only lasts a year in comparison to an LCD which may last 10+ years then the OLED is just a bucket of bolts that looks waxed.

Also, if we're using the Kuro as a plasma comparison then let's use the most advance and recent LCD models as a comparison module as well. I heard the new Samsungs had blacks and colors to match plasmas. From experience, I know my set hasn't had any viewing angle issues and the colors/blacks are almost pitch. Blacks are so close to matching the blacks of the TV frame. Let's just give fair non-one way comparisons here.

As for my opinion, I believe both technologies are the same. Right now, plasma is slightly ahead of the game but the LCD technology is still improving as well. In that case, the rest depends on the qualiy of the set. I think everyone can guess where my vote goes. I want to leave my LCD on for two days straight, or even a week, without having my set have a nervous breakdown.

In the future when I have kids, I also want to let them do what they wish on the TV and walk up and go play without me freaking out about whether or not the set is going to get left on. When I move my TV, I don't want to worry about tilting it or turning it sideways to move it. I just want to move it.

If somebody can debate this and can prove the reliability of a plasma without buttering up the facts AND say the picture is worth it, I will be happy to purchase a plasma as my next TV. I'm just not convinced otherwise.

Actually, I like this thread. I'm unbiased and I search for quality with an open mind. I'd like to see how people present their opinions on why which type of TV is best. It's educational.

LCD!! No ands, ifs, or buts. Reasons being several which in turn are the same criteria I (IN MY OPINION which I am entitled to) used to compare plasmas and LCDs when I made my recent purchase of an LCD HDTV. In addition that is why I gave the Panasonic 800u 2 out of 10 because of these reasons: 1. uses more energy which makes it hot 2. panel too reflective for MY taste 3. did not want to wait on a "break in" period to adjust my tv 4. burn-in, one less hassle I don't want to deal with 5. did not like the ghost image produced by the glass panel 6. no 120 Hz refresh rate 7. much heavier and cumbersome to move than an LCD which can be transported horizontally or vertically and 8. no picture in picture for football on Sundays. The only 2 things the Panasonic 800u had going for it were the price and depth of size compared to what I bought.

Please stop spreading misinformation. Plasmas and LCDs have similar repair rates. See the article below that summarizes Consumer Reports surveys of over 93K sets. In summary, both technologies averaged ~3% failure rate with Pasasonic leading the pack (both LCD and plasma) at 2%.

http://marketnewsblog.blogspot.com/2...-for-flat.html

Is that proof enough?

Wrong - it's because they don't make 21" plasma screens. Another obvious answer.

You don't need to butter up the facts - Panasonic plasma's have a repair rate of 2% - no LCD manufacturer has a repair rate that low.

Funnily enough, Panasonic also has the lowest repair rate on LCD's too - 3%.
