Default Thinking Of Going Plasma.

I just got back from Sear's and I browseing the Plasma tv's and my eyes fixed on a 50inch Plasma Panasonic HD. A Samsung 46inch lcd was sitting right next to it and wow could I see the picture difference. The Plasma had really sharp crisp clean picture and was very colorful and the Samsung LCD looked good but not as good as Panasonics plasma picture. I struck up a conversation with the sales rep and she said this was the new Panasonic Vera Plasma with the 480hz feature and so fourth and she said for movie lovers Plasma is the way to go! Now the stories I heard about Plasma such as burn in and all that scares the crap out of me but she said not to worry because burn in is a thing of the past. She said that Panasonic Plasmas a very good HD tv's and very reliable and I shouldnt worry. They only wanted $899.00 for it and from what I saw it knocked me out picture wise. But before I take the Plasma plunge I need some advice from you guys on if I should or should not replace my Sony 46inch Bravia with a Panasonic Plasma. I am a movie lover and I hear that if thats the case then Plasma is the way to go plus it has the 480hx feature which looks great. So your comments guys would be very helpful. What should I do? Everyones comments are welcome because I have been bitten by the Plasma bug.

Damn at that price I may jump on it, on and I get employee discount, dances. Hmmm, burn in as many let me know here. Is a thing of the past, the chances of it happening is slip. Do you know if the TV is 1080p?

People I know in retail still love Plasma better. More realistic looking, not as processed, viewable from wider angles etc... just be careful about burn-in. Most panels now have counter measures for that but make sure you know what they are so you don't get image retention from images staying up there too long.

Its probably only 720p. Panasonic Plasmas are great, Pan th50pz80u (1080p) can be found for $1250 shipped. So its around $250 more. Depending on how far you are sitting you might want to spend the extra money and go with the 1080p. 1080p you want to sit 6.5-7.5 feet away for 50 inch if you are further away you should just get the 720p.

what model is it? some of the mid range panasonics might be in that range, 1080p.. and the 480hz is a sub field, still displaying at 60 hz... have it on my new tv, and its fantastic...

Burn in is not as much as a threat as it used to be and for most things, the screen changes where those images arent displayed for a long long time. unless you decide to pause the movie for a few days or watching something for days straight with the black bars on, your most likely fine..

I have a 2007 model Panasonic Plasma.

I watch tons of movies.

The kids play tons of PS/3 games.

All the "burn in" stuff. Definitely a thing of the past. Don't worry about it.

I'd suggest you browse through the countless plasma threads in the plasma display technology forum. A Pany plasma is one of the better sets available in terms of picture quality, and for the price there are few, if any, that can touch it. $899 for a 50" set, I will wager it was the 768p model (TH-50PX80U). Resolution is only a small part of the overall picture quality, as you've seen for yourself first-hand. I see the TH-50PZ80U is $1399. Not sure I'd spend an extra $500 for the 1080p, though you can get it at 6th Ave for $1288 and free shipping. Even that's still a pretty significant price difference. If it were only a couple hundred, I'd say get the 1080p.

1) Read the threads that are out there.
2) Panasonic makes one of the best displays out there, period.
3) Don't let folks tell you that you HAVE to get 1080p, because that is just not true. 768p Panys looks phenomenal with HD/BD material.
4) Plasma may show slight IR (image retention), but it goes away quickly and is not permanent. Burn-in is basically a thing of the past.

My Pioneer isn't 1080P and I love every minute of it.

I agree except for #3 for a 50 inch, IMO of course...

Yes, it will look amazing! Don't kid yourself or let others convince you otherwise. You saw the picture. How did it look? I'll pretty much guarantee you that the Sammy next to it was 1080p.

The Samsung was 1080p and for some reason the Panasonic Plasma looked better.

Black levels and ansi contrast ratings of plasmas are higher. These are keys to greater picture quality.

I would take the advice of those people that've already posted.
Panel resolution is not amongst the most important things to factor in when purchasing a TV.

Your 720p plasma will outperform countless 1080p panels on the market.

Of course Blu-ray will look better on a TH-50PZ800U, but it will still look dazzling on the TH-50PX80U.
