I'd suggest you browse through the countless plasma threads in the plasma display technology forum. A Pany plasma is one of the better sets available in terms of picture quality, and for the price there are few, if any, that can touch it. $899 for a 50" set, I will wager it was the 768p model (TH-50PX80U). Resolution is only a small part of the overall picture quality, as you've seen for yourself first-hand. I see the TH-50PZ80U is $1399. Not sure I'd spend an extra $500 for the 1080p, though you can get it at 6th Ave for $1288 and free shipping. Even that's still a pretty significant price difference. If it were only a couple hundred, I'd say get the 1080p.

1) Read the threads that are out there.
2) Panasonic makes one of the best displays out there, period.
3) Don't let folks tell you that you HAVE to get 1080p, because that is just not true. 768p Panys looks phenomenal with HD/BD material.
4) Plasma may show slight IR (image retention), but it goes away quickly and is not permanent. Burn-in is basically a thing of the past.

I agree except for #3 for a 50 inch, IMO of course...
