Default onkyo owners

This is probably a stupid post, but let me explain a mistake i made.

I didnt fully read my owners manual, and there is a lot of features that the onkyos have.

1 of which is the inteli volume. Not knowing what this did i had mine turned all the way up with it in mind that it would help with dialogue, it never did. So reading my owners manual on saturday I learned that it was to balance input signals, so there would be a steep drop or rise from lets say cable to dvd.

Putting this back at 0 and adjusting my other imputs I now currently run my receiver at about 70, where as before 40 was deafening.

Now that i can run the avr at referance levels without shattering windows, my sounds is unbelievable. The lack of bass and mid range I once had is gone. The sound is full and well balanced. I had to reconfigure all of my eq levels and now it sounds great.

I hope this helps some of you out there.

Throwing out the manual without completely reading it? Ashame you only found out about what Intellivolume can do now, but at least you figured it out eventually. I have the 605 too, and it's a good lil' workhorse. But this just goes to show you how a little research and/or reading can make a significant improvement in your HT experience, huh? In some way, I have been guilty of something similiar myself.....oh well, live and learn!

Chances are you were clipping/distorting the signal on top of it. I'd recommend to set it to zero across the board unless you have an input that is significantly louder or quieter.

hmmm, I wonder if that's why when I FF thru commercials and stuff, I hear a "clipping" coming out of my Right rear surround (might be the left also, but I just noticed the right one last nite).

Looks like I need to do some reading, adjust my "Intellivolume" as well, and re-do my Audyssey.

Hey Aerodude, do you remember when we talked about why mine was set at 0 on my 605? This is why.....

cable imput is -5 and dvd is 0...I actually spl the setup..lol

I didnt throw it away just only read odds and ends, it made a huge difference.

I am a guitar player, and I have an amp that will not distort until I really crank it. I have a clean "boost" pedal that will seriously drive the front end and kind of make it break a little. I do this so I can get a true boosted signal at lower volumes, because the amp is so ridiculously loud...Even know it is only 45 watts

This is kind of what i was doing with the intelivolume. I was driving the front end but limiting the output so in turn it was clipping the mids and low end right out of it.

LOL, man I read the 805 manual before it even got to my doorstep! I definitely don't know everything about it but I had it up and running with a quickness.

LOL. thats a funny comment

im with the OP. i dont have time to read a manual. maybe skim thru it.
so i leave it on top of the toilet and when i 'drop the kids off at the pool' i have time to read 10-15 pages IN DEPTH and not rushed.

if its a 'good day' i can get thru maybe 20-25 pages.

Does anybody know what time it is?

..........oh yeah, it's half past I know too much.....

I usaully try to pull a manual on-line and read it before I get the item. That way I have time to post questions about what I read before I set it up. This really helps with getting it working correctly that much quicker.

I have mine set to 8,but the difference is night and day when watching blu-rays,its like a power boost,or putting it on steroids, lol. But,is this bad for the receiver?I don't notice any clipping or distortion at all,if i did i would definitely turn it to 0.

As I was reading up on it today you're introducing another area of amplification and there's a potential for distortion or clipping of the signal. Of course, there are also folks who run everything on "Pure Audio" to get the cleanest signal possible. I don't happen to be one of them. If it sounds ok to you and you're not cranking it, you're probably ok. I'm confused how it sounds like it's "on steroids" though. What about it is different? Have you done an A to B comparison?

That's some funny shit. My wife is sitting across from me playing RE5 asking what I'm laughing about. Lol.

Thats just my silly terminology .It just sounds like its pumped up,like Ahnuld would say,''we want to pump you up''. Old SNL skit. But yes when i set it to 0,it is alot quieter at the same volume.
