Default Help Backing up PS3 Hard Drive (Without the PS3)

Hey guys

My PS3 died and Sony just dropped off the new one.

I've got my bigger HD with all my saves, movies, music etc but of course the PS3 wants to format this when i put it in.

Does anyone have any experience with copying PS3 data from the Drive to a desktop computer? I've got a stack of stuff on their and really don't want to lose it.

Cheers

I've usually done it all. Unfortunately I haven't hooked up a PS3 Formated hard drive to a computer before. However when I hookup a USB to a PS3, it requires this folder format.

PS3\Saved Games\dfdsafd*.*

Look for the parent directory of PS3 and then after that try to figure out what goes with what.

It sucks that you weren't able to do a backup on an External Hard Drive before you sent it in. When you contacted Sony, did they state you needed to take out your new HD first before sending to him? Or did that not come up in the conversation. I'm curious if they would of transferred the information to the 'new' hard drive for you.

Hey Mike, i was hoping you'd be around

Yeah i spoke to them about the HD and they said I'd have to take it out.

Just had this back from one of the guys on EU pS3 site

Can't be done, the PS3 uses a format of storing information on the hard drive which can't currently be read by a PC. Best bit is, if you put that hard drive in a different PS3 from whence it came the first thing the PS3 will do is format it!

Carrying out regular back-ups to an external hard drive can never be strongly enough encouraged.
Looks like I'm screwed.

I'm sorry to hear that man.

If it makes you feel any better when that Saved Game bug first started, I lost all of my Saved Games.

Well, I thought I lost them and basically replayed all of the games while keeping it on a USB stick. I was able to eventually play them later.

EDIT: Oh also! For games like Metal Gear Solid 4, once there is trophy support, you'd have to start a new game anyway!
