Default Blu numbers are higher than you think

I just thought i'd put this out there because I haven't seen it said anywhere that wasn't just a small corner somewhere. I'm sure by now, most of you know that the Blu-Ray:HD DVD margin in the US is somewhere around the 60:40 mark (give or take 5%), and by some standards that lead is not big enough.

I'm sure you also know by now that in most other countries around the world (take UK, France, Australia, and Japan for example) are Blu-dominant by a much larger ratio.

HD DVD fanboys are trying to downplay this by saying that since the US is where most movies are made, that the numbers in the US are the ones that count the most. And they might have a point, BUT...

I know that in both Australia (where I live) and the UK (and probably most of the others as well), HD DVD's are near impossible to actually buy in our shops, so the only real way to get them is to import them from the US. IN fact, a local shop near me (EzyDVD) is selling HD DVD titles that have, in fact, been imported from US retailers.

So much of the "high" HD DVD sales in the US is due to the incredible number of exports, and when you take that fact into consideration, Blu-Ray is doing even better in the United States than you think!

Great point! The US is not the only place that matters. Japan, Europe, and other areas of the world are equally or more important. I even heard that PS3 beats the 360 in Japan.

Haha the 360 is just about non-existant in Japan. The PS3 is WAY more popular.

This is a very good point I've never heard anyone say that before. Thanks!

Not to derail this thread but:

Media Create Sales (JPN Hardware Sales) 10/15 - 10/21

Code:
Hardware - This Week | Last Week | YTD | LTD
1. NDS - 70,608 | 78,746 | 5,727,345 | 19,733,024
2. PSP - 58,669 | 59,584 | 2,066,468 | 6,598,597
3. WII - 24,932 | 20,575 | 2,760,765 | 3,680,408
4. PS3 - 17,130 | 12,365 | 752,425 | 1,209,983
5. PS2 - 10,281 | 10,181 | 627,823 | 20,782,682
6. 360 - 3,011 | 6,161 | 161,508 | 426,210
7. GBA - 270 | 187 | 48,556 | 15,346,635
8. NGC - 48 | 79 | 10,021 | 4,179,489
That's with a year headstart. Wii hardware/software sales in JPN are starting to slow down as well. PSP outsold the DS two weeks in a row when FF:CC and the psp 2000 came out.

in Oz atleast the import market for blu ray is very small alot of region A releases are region locked and even though we share region B with europe the cost of importing from europe is very very costly

on the other hand its pretty cheap to import hd dvds from the US to Oz because our dollar is fairing alright compared to the US one.

truth be told if there was no format war right now I wish BD was region free, but if I have to choose between region free and A/V quality, quality will win.
