Default What are some movies with a great concept but poor execution?

Batman V Superman

The first time Batman and Superman interact with each other in a live action movie. This should've been amazing, and it makes me really sad with how it turned out.

One of my favorite characters in general is Batman. I've been a fan for pretty much my entire life. So the first time I heard about this movie, you can't even imagine how excited I was, and then how disappointed I was when I finally did see it.

Wes Craven's Shocker

A serial killer who can murder you anytime you interact or are near anything tech.

I feel this concept would resonate even more with modern society, due to our over-reliance of technology like phones and social media. This movie's concept was ahead of it's time, and I would love too see a reboot.

The major problem with this movie is, it's all over the place, and doesn't know what it wants to be.

There are plenty, but off the top of my head right now at this moment, Capone (2020). Great concept on seeing a mob boss and how he deals with his own failing health. Problem is, it felt like an unintentional comedy at times. Mob boss or not, there is nothing funny seeing a person go through this at all. I still enjoy the film, but as a guilty pleassure. In the right hands, this could have been Oscar worthy.

Technically well done with a good take on invisibility.... until it turned into Invisible R@pist the movie. Was disappointed that they didn't do anything more creative with the concept.

In Time (2011)

That movie was shot by Roger Deakins, and from the writer of The Truman Show. And while I still enjoy it, it doesn’t live up to the potential of its concept or the beauty of its cinematography at all.

Downsizing (2017)

It's okay, but there's so much more you could do with the premise and this longish two hour plus movie just doesn't satisfy. The filmmaking and cast are good, but it needs a different script. A series would be interesting and may better fit the material.

The Happening. Interesting concept, but not executed well, and the poor casting choices didn't help. Maybe somebody can do something with that idea in the future for a better film.

The same guy who wrote and directed Gattca and Lord of War as well.

It does end up as a bit of a generic thriller which is just happy to play with the basic concept of the counting clock, doesnt ever really reach for anything more than that as he did previously.

It does seem to me that post Lord of War Niccol became a bit more of a gun for hire director/writter and really this was a a film were Timblerlake being pushed as a star by the studio was the main intension. The kind of thing which would end up on a streaming service these days pushing an actor they had signed to a long term deal.

The last jedi

bring back luke after hyping him up the whole previous movie but then ruin everything people love about the characters. Even Mark Hamill was disappointed with the execution of that film.

So you're saying you were fine with the concept of the reclusive Luke, feeling despondent, guilty and responsible for his nephew's fall to the dark side and reluctant to train Rey, or any more Jedi, for fear of bringing more calamity to the galaxy than he feels he already has. (all of which was already mentioned in The Force Awakens, by the way)

As flawed as The Last Jedi is, I still think it's the best of the sequel trilogy.

Generally depends on how you rate movies. Last Jedi had a few of the highest highs and a lot of the lowest lows. Its problems ruin it for me but its probably the easiest of the 3 films to fix.

I mean we would have been better off if they just made a trilogy off of one of the successful book series but that is a full tear down of what we got. I would have loved a Darth bane trilogy or almost anything with the old republic.

It has a mountain of script issues. I thought VII was far better.

Probably true, I think its the only one which has a significant amount of material, generally the stuff around Ben Solo for the first 2/3rds which is genuinely worthwhile and its easier to imagine how that could have been worked into a better film.

The Abrams films to me are just such empty cynical dross its really not easy to see how they could be "saved", I just think there fundamentally bad films which never really had much ambition behind them at all. If anything I think the execution is probably better than the intent as at least they avoid some of the really bad dialog/performances of the prequels.

Sunshine (2007) remove the horror twist and you would have a great sci-fi film.

I feel like the horror element is pretty baked into the film as well, not just the fascination with the sun but theres a spookey vibe to the whole thing.
