Thumbs up Blu-ray has made a movie fan out of me!

Prior to Blu-ray I never owned more than about 20 movies. I always rented DVD's as I could rarely see the benefit of owning something that I knew I wasn't likely going to watch more than once.

The Blu-ray format has changed all of that for me. I can't say that I've viewed my entire BD collection more than once, but I have watched about a dozen of them several times. And I know I'll watch them again.

Having a pretty decent HT setup has obviously helped tremendously as well, but even if one didn't have that luxury, the BD format is so vastly superior that it has made a movie fan out of me.

What has been your experience moving into the Blu-ray format?

John

A little different. I owned quite a bit of DVDs, but am loving Blu-ray. It's an amazing technology that IMO will only get better over time. I hope to see 100 GB discs and upward that will be able to have entire television shows on them.

I definitely never got into the home theater stuff until Blu-ray.

I had a DVD collection that I built to a modest size (about 60). Since Blu-ray has come out, in the last 6 months or so, I have a larger Blu-ray collection than a DVD collection.

I've had a very similar experience with blu ray. Before getting my PS3 as a gift from my fiance', i only owned about 60 DVD's. Since getting the PS3, and my 42 and 46" LCDS i have since bought 50 blu rays and 13 PS3 games as well as a surround sound system!! And the sick thing is, i'd do it all over again

Blu Ray is an awesome viewing experience that is only getting better. I always show off my system to my friends and they are shocked at the clarity and sound.

I find myself buying about 1 Blu-ray a week and I'm always looking for what may be that next reference disc. Know what I mean? I'll always be an audio lover first and Blu-ray compliments that aspect as well. I have quite a few Concert BD's and I'm lovin' the experience.

Nothing as change for me except the format. Had a huge VHS collection, upgraded to DVD and now to BD. I only buy the movies I actualy love and know I will be watching at least more then 5 times. I do not blind buy, again same as always. All the movies I wanted upgrade from VHS are now in DVD and I will slowly upgrade those I wish to see in BD.

It's business as usual for me.

I have about 2000 DVDs and 50 BDs. I buy movies that I like, just as I always did, except now I buy them in blue boxes instead of black ones!

I'll upgrade some titles, just as I would if an improved DVD version had come out a few years ago.

I am incredibly impressed by the HD picture quality and mostly impressed by the HD sound, but it's not changed my buying habits one bit.

I certainly wouldn't buy a film just because it was on BD, even if it was considered a "reference disc". For me a disc can only truly be "reference" if the movie on it is something I love. Crap in HD is still crap!

I guess you could say Blu-ray has done the same for me as well.

While I've always been a HUGE movie fan, I was mainly interested in watching them in the theatre and then buying a few of my favorites to own on DVD for home watching.

I'm not entirely sure what kept me from buying more movies on DVD though. I definitely see more value in building a collection now - I know that much. The quality has gotten to a point that I think I'd be happy watching these things in 20 years time or even longer so even if I won't watch a title a lot in a short period of time, in the long run, I'll be watching all of my titles multiple times whenever the mood happens to strike me.

I have rediscovered some of my old favorite movies since going Blu. Movies I haven't seen in a loooooooong time when watching them on Blu-ray is like seeing them for the first time. While I never had a massive DVD collection, about 100 was the most at one time, I could certainly see myself building a nice library of Blu's.

Watching films in HD now has definitely motivated me into watching a wider variety of films. I had a robust collection of DVDs before getting into BD, mostly sci-fi, fantasy, Disney and TV stuff. But through HD and BD, I've bought titles like How the West Was Won, Band of Brothers, Bonnie and Clyde and Planet Earth, titles I would never have bought on DVD. Reviews I'd read said these were not only entertaining films or documentaries, but also rated high PQ. Except for Brothers which I still need to open and watch and Bonnie and Clyde which I saw as a kid, I haven't been disappointed at all with any of these blind buys.

I'm with the OP. I owned maybe 15-20 DVD's and now that I think back, I can't figure out why I even bought those. But after Blu-ray, I now have a much higher appreciation for films and I take watching movies seriously. I just can't get enough.

I don't understand how a bit of extra resolution can suddenly give somebody a higher appreciation of films.

You either love movies or you don't.

Being a front pj owner for over 20 years, I've always been compelled to seek out the highest source playback device available, which in the beginning, was the Laserdisc format, argueably the 'father of hidef'. Besides offering the pinnacle of resolution at the time, the most exciting aspect of those shiny 12" discs for me was the advent of widescreen (letterboxed) content! I remember my early letter-writing campaigns to the studios to push for more LD titles in their OAR, as well as the inclusion of that title's original movie trailer -- features we've taken for granted since the days of dvd. Therefore, I've been a movie collector before many of this site's members were born. The BD format is thus just another logical step in the evolution of H/T....i.e., I'm luvin' it

That's not something I even thought about, but yes I agree. I love the letterbox format. We get to see everything now and don't have to choose which Full or Wide version of a movie we want to buy. Good point!

Collecting DVDs or BDs or any title on any format can be addicting. A while back, I got so bad with DVD's that I couldn't leave Wal-Mart without atleast one! I stopped buying them for a few years and now it's BD's turn. I already have 40 in my collection and it's been a month or so since I got my PS3.

I exactly agree with you. IMO I find few movies to be entertaining and of replay value, I skipped DVD because I always found it blurry and lousy, but now I have bought by 5-6 favorites on blu ray and I dont regret it.

I had a collection of over 300 DVDs, the majority of which I did watch more than once. Now I have all but completely liquidated my entire collection of DVDs and "YES" Blu-ray has made a "born again" movie fan out of me. HD is so nice.

done it all from vhs to laserdisc to dvd--- each time I upgraded I was
impressed with "new technology"-- especially laserdisc to dvd (anybody
remember all the "speckling" that lasers had? -- when dvd came out I was
so pleased it had a "clean" picture without speckle dots and lines)

but blu-ray is a totally different experience--- the picture is SO MUCH
better that it prompted me to upgrade my tv (and wall mount it) and even set up theatre seating in my family room--

watched THE DARK KNIGHT last night with friends--- the picture, the sound, the home theatre set-up--- AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
