Default Games much louder than Movies?

Hi,

I don't know if anyone has figured out a solution to this but I use my PS3 for movies and games and there is a major difference in the volume of the 2 activities.

For movies (DVD or Blu Ray) I have the volume about -20 and for games I need the volume to be around -35.

Has anyone found a way to have everything around the same level of loudness?

I use HDMI output for audio and video and have the PS3 output everything as PCM.

Thanks,

-Brian

My setup is the same. I use the ps3 for both as well and i run my movies around -20 - -10 but the games have to usually be at -25 - -30...

I have the same setup, and have the same circumstances. Games are much louder, even through TV speakers.

Same here. PS3 with Onkyo 606. Games are much louder than movies.

My only solution is to adjust the volume of the game through the game's options menu. Usually the middle of the volume/sfx bar works for me.

Ok,... I'm not alone with this one.

I'll snoop around in my AVR settings and PS3 settings when I get a chance but I think this is just a case of "that's the way it is."

Yes and it's very annoying. There's a huge difference between game and movie volume.

Can't you just turn the in-game volume down from 100%?

I do like 100% though

Yeah, I think this is pretty much just "the way it is". Really annoying. I just deal with it and adjust the volume up and down every single time I play a game...

Except you'd have to change the in-game volume down for EVERY game.

Hmm, mine's the opposite. I play games at about -30 and watch movies at about -20. Weird. It never bothered me though, I don't switch back and forth from games to movies very much.

Lol oops I misread the line in your OP. Thought it said -20 for games so I assumed the -35 was for movies...

Really though, it's not annoying (for I like loud stuff...hehe). But it is disheartening that movie volume is way lower than games. It's just weird.

Here's the solution I use to get them about equal.

put on a video (whether it's a trailer you downloaded to your hard drive or a blu-ray disc shouldn't matter) and press ""

the menu that pops up will have an audio option (not the music note, but the loudspeaker looking thing) press that, and from there you'll have the ability to raise or lower the video's audio - it maintains its setting and doesn't affect your gaming's audio

I've noticed the same thing but with SD channels and HD channels. The SD are much louder. Same goes for DVD and Blu-rays.

Isnt that just the sound level for the ps3 in general? Meaning it wouldnt matter if you adjust that cuz its going to raise or lower the sound all together...

Games and movies have always been like that. I remember this topic being brought up years ago during the GameCube days. I guess it's the way they master the game disc. They do it on purpose. I remember someone saying that the sound level for movies are where they're supposed to be, but they pump up the volume for games.

I guess you could look into a receiver that has Audyssey Dynamic Volume.

Sony added dynamic normalizer (firmware 2.70) for music in order to allow music to play at the same volume. Seems like the should eb able to add this or apply this functionallity to all sound. That would be more ideal than just for music. Guess you can try that setting to see if it helps although the descriptions does specifically specify for music.
