Default Blu-ray Community Top 50 of All Time RESULTS

After working hard for a couple of hours, the list is finally done. Honestly going in, I didn't know how great or how horrible the list would turn out. Much to my surprise, this list is pretty damn good. It has a mix of old films with a mix of newer films, every film fan will be able to relate to this list, which I think is fantastic.

First off, I want to thank the following people for participating in this list:

- Kryptonic
- Blu Blood
- toefer
- JJ Hunsecker
- ParadoxLC
- DJ Method
- Steve46
- kotsedriver
- Call_Me_Megatron
- Duffy 12
- Al the Stange
- mjbethancourt
- Avond
- the dark angel
- broganreynik
- kpkelly
- ViralIncubator
- Theoretic
- garylewa
- jhiggy23
- Orlando Eastwood
- jimmystewart
- shadblz
- bluewater
- elandyll
- King Czar
- vegeta 88
- Astalder

A total of over 350 movies were nominated for this list, so the competition was a little tough. Also, a lot of movies to my surprise came out to a tie. For the tiebreaker, I placed the movie that was nominated the most amount of times ahead. If the film was nominated the same amount of times, the film that was nominated at the highest ranking was placed ahead. I didn't want to do ties because this makes the list smoother.

I'll unveil the Top 50 list a little bit at a time, in this order:

50-46
45-41
40-36
35-31
30-26
25-21
20-16
15-11
10-8
7-5
4
3
2
1

Now I wont post these several days apart, the whole list will be up by tomorrow night. I just want to encourage you guys to discuss the list as we go a long, because that way we can appreciate some of the films on the list instead of just talking about the number 1 film.

All right, that's enough chit chat. Let's start this!

Romulus, thank you so much for taking the time to compile this list. It will be very interesting to see the results, as from what I've seen there is a wide-range of films people have chosen, and for the most part, the films are legitimate contenders for a top 50 list. Now, for the five you have unveiled so far (for the record, I did not include any of the following in my top 50):

50) King Kong (2005)--I thought that this was a fantastic movie and a significant upgrade over the original and first remake. While some may argue that there was too much action, that the film was too long, and that there were sub-plots that were abandoned, I disagree. I loved that Peter Jackson divided the film into three parts, and I think that each section was successful. Some things that I liked about the movie were the interesting and well shot action scenes, the ability for Jackson to personify and show the emotions of Kong, and the phenomenal ice rink scene. I did not include this film in my top 50, simply because I thought there were better movies to include. However, I completely respect this movie being included, as it is a masterpiece to me. Not to mention, it is one of the top 3 best blus in terms of picture and audio quality that I have seen.

49) The Green Mile--I also thought that this was a great movie and a legitimate top 50 choice. Frank Darabont, Tom Hanks, and Michael Clarke Duncan all did a great job here, and the movie was a great adaptation of Stephen King's story. I don't think that it is top 50 quality, but it is a great film in its own right and I cannot complain too much with this selection.

48) ET--A classic and iconic film that I remember seeing when I was a kid. I may not have included it in my list, but once again, I think that it is a legitimate top 50 selection.

47) Clockwork Orange--Now, here is where I have a problem. I can understand why this film is in the top 50, as it is highly regarded both critically and by film fans, but I personally list it as one of the top 5 WORST films I have ever seen. I think it is a completely pointless movie with terrible direction, acting, and writing. Trust me, I am ready for a backlash here. I have nothing against Kubrick, despite my reservations about him, but this is not one of his best films. Lolita, for instance, was a much better film. As was Full Metal Jacket and The Shining, let alone some of his other films. I will not get into my reasons for hating this film as much as I do, but I do not agree with its position, despite my understanding of why it is on the list.

46) Fight Club--My reaction to this film is similar to above. While not one of my top 5 least favorite films, or top 5 worst films, I just thoroughly disliked it. I think that Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter are all great actors and I think the story is intriguing in its own right, but I just did not like the film, mainly because of its morals. Just did not do it for me.

45) Taxi Driver--I actually watched this film last night. The only explanation for the film falling this far is that some people haven't seen it, or that people put it lower on their list or did not include it because of its lack of replay value. I think that this was Deniro's best performance besides The Deer Hunter. It is a tremendous movie that is way too low on the list for its quality and complexity.

44) Pan's Labyrinth--It baffles me how this film could be ranked higher than Taxi Driver (yes, I know the point system). I respect the originality and creativity of this film, but I thought it was a very average, 2 1/2 star movie.

43) Wizard of Oz---I did not include this in my top 50, but it is a completely legitimate selection because of its contribution to film. No complaints here.

42) The Lives of Others--Sadly, a film that I had in my top 10 has fallen this far. The only reason it fell this far was because many of the people who included lists probably have not seen it. If they had, I am positive it would have been in their top 10 or 20. Proof of this is that it received as many points as it did based on only 3 nominations, but it took The Matrix 13 nominations to get the same amount of points--each of the three of us had it in our top 10. Way too low.

41) The Matrix--I included this in my top 50 because it is one of the most original movies to have ever been made. A complete gem in terms of creativity, both in writing and directing. Great selection.

I absolutely love Pan's Labyrinth and The Matrix.

Haven't seen Taxi Driver, A Clockwork Orange, or The Lives of Others. This thread will probably be a good reminder of movies I still need to see.

My take so far:

50. King Kong (2005) - I'm actually quite surprised that this made the list, even at number 50. I remember seeing it in theater and I thought it was quite bad. Even when I revisited it about a year later, I still wasn't that impressed with it. I'm a huge fan on Peter Jackson, but I wouldn't call this his best film by any means. I didn't include this in my Top 50 obviously, but it looks like the film is quite respected on this board.

49. The Green Mile - I'll confess, it's been about 7 years since I've seen this film. I actually just got it from Netflix about 2 days ago and have yet to watch it. Definitely don't have a problem with it being in the Top 50, I wouldn't place it in mine however for the same reasons you mentioned, jhiggy.

48. E.T. - Like jhiggy, great film all around. It's honestly no surprise that it landed in the Top 50. I think 48th is a perfect spot for it.

47. A Clockwork Orange - This is where I disagree with your jhiggy. I'm quite pleased that this film made the Top 50. It's definitely one of my favorite Kubrick films, probably in the Top three with Dr. Strangelove and 2001: A Space Odyssey. I think it offers quite an insightful social commentary and a deep look at psychiatry.

46. Fight Club - I included this on my list as well. I think Edward Norton's performance is absolutely fantastic. I think I would have placed it higher, but even though it's a social commentary... it wasn't executed well, IMO. I think the story and performances were the driving force behind the film for me.

45. Taxi Driver - Crucify me, I haven't seen it!

44. Pan's Labyrinth - One of my favorite foreign films. I don't like any of Del Toro's other work (Hellboy), but I think he just nailed this film. I saw it twice in theaters and probably 4-5 times on Blu-ray. I loved that it was a very gruesome fairy tale, a mix that worked better than I thought it would. Overall I always like darker films, so going in I should have known I would have really liked it.

43. The Wizard of Oz - I think it's great that this film had made it. When I first decided to do this list I thought hardly any old films such as this would make it. I didn't include it in my Top 50, but it completely deserves to be on here.

42. The Lives of Others - Jhiggy, I agree with you completely. Assuming that the three of us that nominated were the only to see it, I think it would have placed much higher if more people had seen it. In the nomination thread I praised this film quite a lot, and for good reason.

41. The Matrix - I had this on my list as well. I'm actually quite surprised this didn't end up higher on the list. When I went through most of the lists, this had a bunch of nominations at 1 point. While the sequels were quite... lacking, this is still a deserving film.

what does "nominated" and "highest ranking" mean???

nominated is how many people on the list had it in their list?
highest ranking is the best on any list?

how did you compute total points?

with the caliber of movies thus far (amadeus, ET, taxi driver, clockwork orange), there is a very small group of movies from which the remaining can be chosen.

There are a few that I'm regretting not putting on my list. Like Taxi Driver. But at this point, I'd say we're going to end up with a pretty prestigious list. I'll be interested to see the rest of the list.

Up the Irons!!!

Whenever I have two or movies that the same amount of points (42 points for example), instead of having all of them tied at that number I have a tiebreaker system. If two films are tied, the one that was nominated the most gets placed ahead. I both films were nominated 4 times, then the film that received the highest ranking from an individual gets placed higher. Example: Batman Begins and Signs received 30 points and each received 6 nominations. However, Batman Begins placed as high number 4 on one list while Signs only reached number 10. Thus, I would put Batman Begins above Signs. Now, if two films each received the same amount of points, the same amount of nominations, and both had the same highest ranking, only then would I label it a tie. As was the case with Glory and Amadeus.

I computed points by merging everyone's lists in a master list. If a movie had more then one nomination, I would combine the points. Then the Top 50 films would qualify.

Ranking system went as is:

1. 20 Points
2. 19 Points
3. 18 Points
4. 17 Points
....
17. 4 Points
18. 3 Points
19. 2 Points
20-50. 1 Point

Haha, don't worry, if somebody put up a crazy list and those films weren't nominated on any other list, it would be impossible for them to place on the list.

Already seeing what you've posted I've seen many movies that even I forgot to put on my list.

So far I think the list is pretty reasonable. Nothing seems way too low yet, but I guess the rest of the list will decide whether that remains the case.

40) Gone With the Wind--Just not a favorite of mine, although it is certainly a classic and it is understandable that it is included.

39) Glory--I think this is a great movie, which I included in my top 50. Fantastic performances all around, and I know Denzel deservedly is highlighted, but I think that Matthew Broderick was the real surprise for me. Ed Zwick has to be one of my favorite directors, as I love most of his movies (Glory, Courage Under Fire, The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond). If nothing else, he picks interesting topics and shoots action as good as anyone.

38) Amadeus--I admit, I haven't seen this movie yet although it is on my netflix queue.

37) The Shining--I believe I had this on my list, although I'm not too sure. I think it is one of the top 3 horror movies, along with Psycho and The Orphanage (although I wouldn't truly classify either as a real horror movie). I admit I'm not a huge Kubrick fan, but this along with Lolita are my two favorite films of his. I thought that this film had excellent direction and acting by Jack Nicholas.

36) Gladiator--a very good epic action movie, but imo, not on par with Braveheart, the Last Samurai, or others. One reason for this is that the characters just did not intrigue me as much as in the other two movies. Also, the topic wasn't quite as interesting to me. Still a good movie though, and Djimon Hounsou is tremendously underrated.

Note: I apologize to anyone that is annoyed that I am posting my opinions on each film--I'm doing this simply because I enjoy formulating my thoughts on these movies, some of which I haven't seen in awhile.
