Default PS3 display problems

I have a couple of questions:

1) I'm almost positive my nephew's TV is 1080p. However, when I go into "display settings" in the ps3 menu, and then I try to check "1080p" (then it tests the TV), the display is awkward. It doesn't look right. I just leave it on 1080i. I KNOW before we switched rooms though 1080p was working. What is causing this problem--a 1080p TV which is only doing 1080i?

2) Even when on 1080i, when I load NBA 2K (which goes up to 1080p), it displays 720p at the beginning of the game. Why is that? Shouldn't it at least show "1080i" since that's what the ps3 is set on?

Thanks in advance!

Try checking the 1080p ONLY. If you still have the problem, I guess the T.V is NOT 1080p. Hope it works.

first, we need to know what kind of TV you have to be sure what resolution is supported.

next, try turning off 1080p/24Hz

Settings - Video Settings - BD 1080p 24 Hz Output (HDMI) - Off

also, when switching TV's you might just need to do a video connection reset...

hold the power button (while in standby) until it beeps a couple times.

Thanks for the quick replies, ya'll.

His TV is a KLV-s23a10.

I want to try to select ONLY 1080p, but it won't let me "uncheck" 480p.

yeah, I was checking the user manual under specifications...1080i is max resolution.

Its actually a ~720p set, but will accept 1080i signal.

So you should have selected 480p,720p & 1080i

Thanks. I just put on a movie for him, and it's in 1080i. That's fine.

Why does NBA 2K only show up as 720p though? The back of the game says it can go to 1080p. Shouldn't it be 1080i on my TV then?

most PS3 games are native 720p...even if the box says it will do other resolutions.

Okay, so even though the back of the box says "1080i, 1080p", if my TV is set at 1080i, the game really is only capable of 720p?

So I'm good?

thanks

The reason they have 1080i and 1080p support on the back of PS3 games is that many of them are for people owning older HDTVs (Some Rear projection CRTs and early model digital displays) that had no support for resolutions such as 720p. The nice thing about this is that people that want HD can still use their older HDTVs with HD video, 720p only games are not scaled and are downconverted to 480p, which is a disadvantage to those owning those displays.

there are some games 1080p native...but the vast majority are 720p.

So if the game plays at 720p, I would not worry about it.
