Default HDMI cable question

So I've got my reciever, my tv, my blu-ray player, and 2 hdmi cables. What's the correct combination for connecting them? Ex: bluray to tv and receiver to tv? Bluray to receiver and Reciever to tv? does it matter? Thanks!

do you have speakers connected to your receiver? if you do then i would recommend connecting the blu-ray to the receiver. the sound from your system speakers will be superior to your TV speakers. you can also get lossless audio as long as either your player can bitstream it and your receiver can decode it or if your player can decode it onboard and then you can send it to your receiver to play.

the quality of sound is the difference, remember in HT, sound is 1/2 & video is 1/2, and to me, yes it matters!

If we could get some model numbers, that would help in the connection questions. Most HTiB systems don't have an HDMI input, so knowing the model type will help us get you the best possible connections for use.

I believe it's this system here: Sony - 840W 5.1-Ch. Home Theater System w/ Upconvert DVD Player
Model: DAV-HDZ273

Although I think mine is 1000w. Other than that everything else is the same.

Thanks for providing the model number. It's just as I thought, your "receiver" doesn't have an HDMI input. So in order to hook it up, you need to do the following.
-HDMI cable from PS3 to TV for video
-Optical cable from PS3 to audio in on the back of your "receiver".
-Set the Audio output on the PS3 to "optical" and "bitstream"

With your current setup, you will not be able to get lossless surround. You will only get Dolby Digital and DTS surround modes.

Hope that helps.

Thanks! I guess I'm going to have to get an optical cable.

I looked through the manual for your receiver, and being HDMI passthrough, the only way to get audio is to connect the optical/co-axial output. Your receiver does not process anything on the signal, it simply feeds the signal through. So you would have to connect your blu-ray player to an HDMI input for video, assign a digital audio input to that HDMI input, and then output the video to the TV through the HDMI output.
