Default Will Sony Still Make SXRD Bulbs?

Since TV makers are going flat screen will the bulbs for the SXRD rear projection TV allways be available? I think Sony stopped making their rear projection models right? Thanks.

nobody will make anything forever and yes, sony doesn't make RPTV's anymore. i purchased one from these folks and was very happy with the product, the cost and the quick shipment. i highly recommend them. they also carry lamps for other sony models.

http://www.amatteroffax.com/itempage...ctor-lamp.html

The XL-5200 replacement lamp is designed to replace the original lamp of your Grand WEGA® A Series TV.

Replacement lamp for Grand Wega® A Series TV. Compatible with several models including the KDS-50A2000, KDS-55A2000 and KDS-60A2000.

it cost with shipping under $100.00 and i had it inside of 3 days and it's the complete assembly, unlike some other places where they show you a picture of the complete lamp assembly but just send you the lamp (bulb only) and you have to take apart the old assembly and that could lead to problems. best of luck with your block and hope the info on the bulb might be usefull to you (or any owner) in the future.

best of luck, keep us posted!

Thanks for the info. I know how to get the bulbs, I even replaced one myself, but didn't realize you could get them that cheap. Would it be good to get a couple of those for backup? I was just curious about Sony still making them since they don't make the rear projection anymore. Maybe they would feel it was a waste of time and money and the rear projection people would have to upgrade to a flat panel wide screen HDTV?

i agree with that statement. i don't think they make them anymore since they don't make the sets anymore. other than the class action suits about the optical blocks, you are gonna be out of luck with sony on RPTV support. under my warrenty with BB i got a lamp change for free. my original lasted 3.5yrs i got this one for the reasons i stated. it is still a great HDTV, with an incredible picture too!

Do you think that once stores don't have them in stock anymore that's it? Then they wont be able to order more?

A bigger issue than the bulb is the optical block. They have been failing dramatically, and Sony's obligation under the class action lawsuit ends next year. New bulbs aren't going to help us if the block is shot.

i suspect that for a short time if the demand for the lamps is high, then stores will place orders from them and factories will crank some out, for a short time anyway. obviously, the push would be to get everyone to a flat panel of some type. purchasing a lamp or two would not be a bad idea. i just got mine replaced and i bought a new one so i'm good for (i hope) a couple of years!

this is very true, while i'm sure some will go with no trouble from their blocks, others, lots, will not be so lucky. they will have problems if their blocks fail after the alotted claim time is up. for them, it's new tv time. believe it or not, everyone who has not had their block start to go should hope it does so before the cut off date. i think they have been relatively sucessfull once replaced. of course there have been a couple that had to either be replaced again or they were compensated by sony in some shape or form. the only other problem is that sony, during their obligated time may tell you to pay to have it done and you will be reimbursed for the cost which of course, during these tough economic times many of us can't afford to pay out of pocket for the repair and wait however long it may take to get the money back.

i was very fortunate, mine failed almost a year ago (or so) and it was replaced by BB since i had an extended warrenty for it with them.

best of luck to all of us with these sets!

Is it ok to store the bulbs in a cabinet or a drawer? With that link you provided I may just buy a couple of them. That is the bulb from Sony not a generic brand that they are selling in that link?

Well, Sony doesn't make the bulbs anyway. They're made by Philips, Osram, and a few other bulb makers.

Also, and I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I would STAY AWAY from amatteroffax.com.

Taking the recommendation of another forum member, I bought my first SXRD replacement lamp from them (approx. $100). About 3 days after installing it (it was an Osram lamp + housing), my TV started to flicker terribly. I tried to contact amatteroffax several times by phone, and 3 times via email, and they NEVER responded to any of those attempts.

About a month later, I made another effort, and they replied back with... "Your refund/return period has expired."

I ended up getting a Philips lamp + housing from an eBay dealer called NioSales, after seeing hundreds of stellar reviews about them. The price was good ($112 at the time), the shipping was fast, and the packaging was sealed.

The difference in packaging leads me to believe amatteroffax.com was hocking refurbs as "new" because their box was not sealed, nor was their lamp sealed within the box, and there were no markings or branding on the box--just plain cardboard. (It also took about 2 weeks to get it delivered.)

The Philips lamp from NioSales arrived in 3 days, came in a sealed Philips-branded box, and inside the lamp housing was sealed as well. It has worked flawlessly for several months now.

i believe everything you said happend between you and amof is true. i will say that this was your experience with them. others have also said they had trouble. i did some googling and checked reviews before i bought from them. i found more reviews for and less against. the ones against were like you and had a very bad experience with them, but, the ones that were good were very good. i took the chance and had my lamp within 3 - 4 days of ordering. this was the second thing i ordered from them with the same delivery time frame. when i place my order, i received an email confirmation of the order, got email that my card was accepted and processed then got a final email with shipping & tracking info and a couple of days later it was delivered. i've ordered replacement parts online from other places before and even from the maker of that equipment and most didn't come in a retail package that said "sony" or anything else like that. most came in a plain brown or white box with a packing invoice and instructions if it was supposed to come with them. i, unlike you have not installed my lamp because i bought it as a spare, my current lamp of 3.5 years was replaced under an extended warranty. so, i can't tell you if the lamp won't fail once installed; no one can tell you that. i can tell you it doesn't look like it's been used, refurbished or anything like that, it looks new.

i only recommended them because the lamp thing came up and i had just purchased one from them and had a great experience. i'm not gonna swear by them i can only go by the thus far good experiences i've had using them twice.

Here is something interesting from the site you recommended that they had to say about their lamps:

"This is a brand new, never been used, XL-5200 / XL-5200U / XL5200/ F-9308-860-0 / F93088600 replacement lamp. Sony uses Philips Original Lamps. This is a recycled Sony OEM housing with a BRAND NEW PHILIPS LAMP INSTALLED BY OUR SERVICE PROFESSIONALS! Don't let your TV go dark, buy a spare lamp now so when that day comes, you are ready with this certified BRAND NEW replacement lamp, Factory fresh, with a

FULL 6 MONTH WARRANTY!

WE ARE THE MOST EXPERIENCED LAMP SELLER ON EBAY FOR OVER 5 YEARS, BUY FROM THE PROS, WE HAVE BEEN IN THE PARTS BUSINESS FOR 44 YEARS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SATISFACTION IS OUR #1 GOAL!"

based on that lets say that is how amof does it, fine, perhaps you got a badly installed new lamp which would fail, no excuse for your bad customer service but you accused them of "hocking refurbs as "new" because their box was not sealed, nor was their lamp sealed within the box, and there were no markings or branding on the box--just plain cardboard" when they admitted that they gave you a new lamp in a refurbished housing put together by their staff so they put the lamps into "sealed boxes" not sony or anyone else, them. the picture of the lamp shown at the site, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=390072876429 looks just like the lamp assembly i purchased from amof.

i'm just saying that perhaps you had a badly put together lamp that could have happened at NioSales too. then you had the bad customer experience. i respect your review and what you said, i just wanted to get the other side out. perhaps a good deal could be purchased at either of these sites. everyone, to be fair, be cautious when making purchases, no matter where.

It's all good. And thanks for that eloquent reply, and not biting my head off or something. So many people react so personally on the Internet that I really appreciate it when people take the time to craft their comments benignly.

You are absolutely correct that bad and good experiences can be had with a variety of vendors. For example, I <3 Amazon, but I have had a few bad experiences with them. Thankfully, the good outweighs the bad. Unfortunately for AMoF, my lamp purchase is probably the one and only purchase I'll ever make from them, so it's a shame it was sullied by such a poor experience.

Just to clarify, when I bought my lamp from AMoF, they had two options: a refurbed housing + new bulb, or a new housing + new bulb. I bought the more expensive of the two (new housing + new bulb), so I was intending for it to be new. It's possible they just shipped me the wrong one, and I did get a poorly-installed refurb by mistake. But again, as we've agreed on, the customer service was crappy in my case. What's funny is their system keeps sending me auto-reminders to review them on sites like Bizrate.com. LOL.

One thing I will say about NioSales vs AMoF, or any other vendor: check their return policy and warranty. At the time of my purchase, the packing slip from AMoF said theirs was 14 days. NioSales gave me 6 months. I've seen others with 1 year, although those were much more expensive (usually $199-$250).

Best of luck when you do install that lamp, though. I hope it works out OK!

I am not out to bite anyones head off and yes your welcome because I don't want mine bit off! one good thing that comes from this type of dialouge is we all become more knowledgeable, savay and informed users and consumers in our hobby. I suspect, as i already see someone has posted another vendor who sells lamps for our RPTV's. as long as we all stay in a positive frame of mind, only good will come of this.

again, thanks buddy for your understanding, i think we can walk away knowing we helped ourselves and others!

Is this an official Sony lamp I can use? I am thinking about buying two of these too stock up on. These are $89.00 each they also have the housing.

http://www.advancedlamps.com/Genuine...cc689a07307115

I thought about stocking up because I saw Ultra HD TV might be coming in 2017.
