Default Onkyo receiver problem?

In the past, when I've played a movie with a 'Dolby TrueHD' or 'DTS-MA HD' soundtrack, the Onkyo 876 receiver will show the respective logos/information on the display screen. All of a sudden, it now shows ALL movies decoded as 'MCH PCM'.

I may be wrong, but I'm guessing that technically this shouldn't matter with the sound, it's just that I'm wondering what happened to make the receiver suddenly change the way it operates?

If anyone knows why this happened and/or how I can maybe change it back, I would appreciate it, thanks in advance!

Go into your settings in your Blu-ray player & make sure it is set to Bitstream.

Mine will do that if it is set on PCM.

I checked the settings on the player and the only thing that I could find was something about HDMI audio setting - all I could choose was "Auto" or "PCM". (It's on Auto).

I did get a new blu-ray player (Sony BDPS-380) to replace my old Sony BDPS-550, so is it possible that this new one decodes the audio before it hits the receiver?

Try to set it to PCM & see what happens.

The Sony BDP-S380 can do both internal decoding of the HD codecs and bitstreaming (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...PS380#features ). Make sure it is set to bitstream. If it is, try switching it to LPCM and then back to bitstream. If you still don't see bitstream in the player's sound options, turn off everything, remove the HDMI cable, switch it around and reconnect it and check to see if bitstream is now available.

Set it to "PCM" and the receiver showed the same thing. I was searching and found similar things that lead me to believe that the new BD player is decoding the audio and my receiver isn't showing the original audio track like it used to. I looked up my old BD player and it too decodes the audio before sending it so why would I see the original audio tracks on the receiver with the old one and not the new one that are essentially doing the same thing? Thanks for your help crazyBLUE.

Scrap that, I'm reading the instruction manual and this player uses confusing terms for bitstream. Here's the settings I think you will need so that the player bitstreams:

1) Set the Audio (HDMI) to Auto

2) BD Audio Mix Setting: Set this to OFF

3) Dolby Digital: Set this to Dolby Digital

4) DTS: Set this to DTS

5) DTS Neo 6: Set this to OFF

6) Audio DRC: Set this to OFF

7) Downmix: Set this to SURROUND

I think that's stupid, I like how my player just lets me pick Bitstream and I'm done.

Mess around with the settings & try different things. I don't have a Sony But I find it odd there is no setting for Bitstream.

Mine has 2 different Bitstream settings & PCM to choose from.

OK, the problem has been fixed...

There is a setting in the audio settings called "BD Audio MIX Setting". It is set to "ON" by default.

[On] Outputs the audio obtained by mixing the interactive and secondary audio to the primary audio.
[Off] Outputs the primary audio only. Select this to output HD audio signals to an AV amplifier (receiver).

I don't really understand the 'on' option.

I switched it to "OFF" and all is good now! Thanks for all your help guys.

They're probably talking about special features audio, like commentaries. To listen to commentaries you might have to switch it to on. Check with a commentary, if you only hear the movie's audio and not the commentary then i'm right.
